    Nightly Backup Suggestions Please ?

    Hello All

I'm new to the fedora forum, ive been a linux user since 2013 and have run Ubuntu/manjaro/arch and a few derivatives, i switched to fedora because im blown away by the quality and polish and i believe it will be useful for my RHCSA studies.

Id like to try out rawhide, but id like to setup a nightly os backup so that if something does break and i can't troubleshoot it id like to be able to roll back, i was previously using veeam agent for linux however its not supported with the latest kernel.

Could i have some suggestions for an automated backup process please ?

I'm going to use clonezilla in the meantime to keep me backed up.

    Thanks in advance

    Ryan

I've started using Timeshift recently in rsync mode on another OS which doesn't use selinux. It's an impressive program for such a small amount of code. It's working nicely with incremental snapshots but my understanding is with Fedora you need to change selinux to permissive temporarily when restoring from the backups Timeshift takes.

Just installed it and it is creating the first snapshot... very intuitive

Besides rolling back to a previous environment (say 3 days ago), can Time Shift be used to do a rebuid after a HD crash (assuming snapshots on different physical media ?) Scenerio where Fedora 29 is re-built on new HD....can you run Timeshift to make the "new" F29 box like the previous one ??

it should allow that in rsync mode but obviously you'd need to double-check the UUID values in fstab and grub match the new drive's partitions before attempting to boot from it.

EDIT - to clarify my comment I have no idea how Timeshift's btrfs mode works as I don't use that file system. I can access all files in the backup locations as they are byte for byte copies of the originals. The incremental backup folders just contain the changed files so obviously you'd have to run Timeshift itself to restore the entire system to whichever snapshot you desire.

    Hi Antikythera,

Did you first use timeshift manually? Are you set up for daily, weekly and monthly?

I left the default schedule in place, so hourly, daily, weekly and monthly are running. The location I use is a NAS RAID array which is on 24/7
