    Errors after installing Virtualbox 6.0

I am new here, so if I am not in the correct forum area please let me know. Anyways, I recently installed Fedora 29 workstation on 3 computers (2 desktops and one laptop) to which I have installed Virtualbox successfully on two. The two that Virtualbox installed on did so without issue. I simply downloaded Virtualbox and installed through the Software Center install button and Virtualbox popped right up.

My third computer however is non-compliant. I tried to install through download/Software Center install and it throws up no errors, but when I click the icon to open it I get nothing. So I attempted following install guides/instructions from both if-not-true-then-false and nixcraft websites. The installation went fine, but I was greeted with the following errors when attempting to launch Virtualbox from the Terminal.
    Code:
Qt WARNING: QXcbConnection: XCB error: 3 (BadWindow), sequence: 419, resource id: 25165828, major code: 2 (ChangeWindowAttributes), minor code: 0
Qt WARNING: QXcbConnection: XCB error: 3 (BadWindow), sequence: 420, resource id: 25165828, major code: 18 (ChangeProperty), minor code: 0 ... continued for like 3 pages
So I was hoping someone could assist me with getting this figured out as this is my main computer. Hardware specs EVGA H370 itx mobo, i5-8500, 8gb GSkill Aegis Ram 2400mhz, and GTX 760. FYI secure boot is disabled, but am running Fedora in EFI.

Re: Errors after installing Virtualbox 6.0

So apparently even though I thought Virtualbox installed correctly on my other computers I was mistaken. I tried to create a Virtual Machine on them, but it wanted me to install some other things so that it could write to the kernel or something. I did attempt to install the dependencies, but it still didn't work. I have spent too much time trying to get this working, so I have decided to just use the built-in "Boxes" for my Virtual Machines. I think the problems lie with the Virtualbox installer and need to be addressed on their end.
So, since I am new here do I need to put "Unsolved / Gave Up" or something at the title of the thread, so others know this thread didn't go anywhere? Someone please let me know and I will oblige. Thanks.

Re: Errors after installing Virtualbox 6.0

Well, in my case, since I am using the rpmfusion NVIDIA driver, I always have dkms installed. Since I am a programmer, I also have gcc installed.
I make sure my BIOS has Virtualization turned on (SVM in the case of Asus/Ryzen).

And installing virtualbox is a jiffy, dnf install .... and that's it. I've never had any issues.
It does compile its own kernel module (vboxsrv), which is probably what is missing on your end.

Re: Errors after installing Virtualbox 6.0

okay bobx001, I have dkms installed(via link in #7 below) before Vbox install attempts and I am pretty sure that gcc comes pre-installed in Fedora 29. I checked my bios and there are two types of intel virtualization (Virtualization Technology and Intel(R) Virtualization Technology For Directed I/O) both of which are enabled. I tried installing Virtualbox the via the Software GUI and from the command line (see #10 below) and I installed the dependencies that it asked for, but when I launch virtualbox (via command line or gui) it acts like it is starting, but I get no window. How do you install Virtualbox? Just sudo dnf install Virtualbox-6.0?

My system specs: i5-8500, EVGA H370 mobo, 8GB GSkill Aries 2400, NVIDIA 760, Samsung 850 EVO 250gb. This is dual boot with Win10 Pro, but I have tried installing Virtualbox on Fed29 without Win10 installed also. FYI, Vbox runs fine in Win10, but I am trying to move away from Windows.

Here is how I have set up my Fedora 29:
    1. Install Fedora 29 in EFI (auto partitioning which defaults to lvm2)
    2. Enable 3rd Party software.
    3. Update. Reboot. Update again. Reboot again. Repeat until all updates are complete via Software GUI.
    4. Install free and nonfree for Fedora 22 and later from https://rpmfusion.org/Configuration via cmd line followed by dnf update.
    5. Enable/Install codecs GStreamer Multimedia Codecs - non-free, libav, and license issues
    6. Enable rpm NVIDIA non-free driver under Software Repositories followed by a dnf update from the cmd line.
    7. Install NVIDIA driver via directions from: https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-insta...edora-29-linux
    8. Install Flatpack repository
    9. Then I install gnome tweaks followed by dash to dock and open weather. I set these to my liking.
    10. Next I start installing software in no particular order. Virtualbox could be first or last. I have tried installing Virtualbox from Software GUI after downloading from the Virtualbox website for Fedora 29. I have also tried the following two guides to no avail: 1. https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/how-to...-fedora-linux/ 2. https://www.if-not-true-then-false.c...-red-hat-rhel/

well, you can choose to install the Virtualbox package which is on rpmfusion (recommendable), or you can download the one from virtualbox.org,
if you are doing the rpmfusion.org version, make sure you install the Fedora 29 package repositories.
if you do the virtualbox.org, just download the rpm , and extension pack, then change folder to ~/Downloads/ and as root type: dnf install ./Virtual.....rpm
that should do it. It also maybe a good idea to remove any old version of Virtualbox you have.
i.e.: rpm -qa | grep -i virtualbox (then go ahead and dnf remove any package that matches).
then reboot, and let it compile its vboxsvc kernel module, etc

Re: Errors after installing Virtualbox 6.0

Alright, to all those Noobs out there to Fedora (like me) attempting to install VirtualBox 6.0 from the Virtualbox website via download. It hasn't worked for me, so if you are new to Fedora or Linux I wouldn't recommend attempting it. Instead install your repositories from https://rpmfusion.org/Configuration if you haven't already. On aforementioned page scroll down to "Command Line Setup using rpm", copy the sudo dnf install ... line from under the "Fedora 22 and later:" heading and paste it in a terminal then hit enter. Enter your password and when prompted "y". Once the repositories have been installed, install Virtualbox from the terminal via the command: sudo dnf install VirtualBox . Hit Enter, provide password, and key in "y" when prompted. (Note: this will not be VirtualBox 6.0, but this version (5.2.24 at time of writing) will work without causing you headaches in Fedora 29)

And thanks to bobx001 for helping me through this!
