    A new old user's questions

Hello. I was using Fedora around the time of 11 and then briefly 15. I kept moving between Debian, Mint and Windows after that but bought an emmc-based laptop with 32 bit uefi, where both Lubuntu and Mint installs became corrupted after a few days with no clear reason. I'd read that Fedora was already 32 bit eufi-friendly and so I've installed Fedora 29 Xfce 64 bit.

It's working quite well and I am adjusting to package install procedures, etc, but I'm wondering if my xorg.conf is adequate or improveable. (I've tried using uxa instead of sna.) Using mpv for many videos produces stuttering. VLC needs the X11 video option to be chosen to give smooth video. The desktop behaviour is not always so smooth e.g. drawing some program windows incrementally. It's not a powerful laptop but Windows 10 behaved better, just that I used metered data and phone tethering and the Updates there were inconvenient, aside from the usual MS objections. I'm wondering if I should have gone with Fedora and LXDE, which I like, or whether the same issues would present.

In Thunar there are no video thumbnails. I installed a recommended package with 'tumbler' in the name to no avail.

A minor issue is that VLC is not offering the gtk theme, has the qt look. I had resolved that issue with Debian-based distros but am stumped with Fedora.

Many thanks in advance of assistance.

Do you have libva-intel-driver installed? If not you want to install it from rpmfusion. That gives you hardware video decode.
