you may have been redirected to the live ISO instead of the net installer. the link you provided above started the 550MB download for me. maybe it's a regional mirror issue? what errors are you getting when trying to boot? please post those.

OK, 550 MB is net installer? I did want Live. How do download net installer if no OS on the machine?

how are you running ubuntu or whichever variant (mint, kubuntu, KDE Neon, ubuntuMATE etc.) of it you are using? are you running that from live media or is it on another machine?

anyhow, please post the error messages you encountered when trying to boot the Live Fedora ISO, it may be resolvable by a boot command if your hardware is still supported by the latest kernels.

    Re: 536 mb?

The machine currently will run Mint 13 Mate 32bit install on HDD. Will run Mint Mate 18.1 Live - even runs scsi scanner w/xsane. No dual booting
Ran Fedora-workstation-live-i386-29-1.2.iso. Got errors - Hardware Errors:
    CPU 0: Machine Check: 0 Bank 1ffffffffffff3eff
    TSC 0 ADDR f49b12a00 processor 2: 6a0TIME 1547265816 Socket 0APIC 0 microcode 0

    CPU 0 Machine Code: Bank 2: f600000000o2dfff

    and so on ...

    then:
    systemd [1] Caught <ILL>, core dump failed (child 170 code=killed, status=4/Ill)

    systemd [1] Freezing execuition

I then booted Mint Mate 18.1 32bit live just to see if anything had stopped working. It booted and ran well, so I don't see why Fedora reported hardware failure.

This machine is ASUS A7N8X-X mobo, Athlon XP3200+ CPU, 2 GB DDR 400 RAM.

    Re: 536 mb?

the new kernel evidently doesn't like your processor, that TSC message indicates a microcode problem. mint 18.1 uses a much older long term support kernel (4.4) so if that works consider trying out another RHEL family distribution that still carries Long Term Support kernels your system needs like CentOS 7 as you should get that to boot and install fine.

Incidentally, kudos for keeping that hardware running so long. Many years back I had the same CPU with an ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe. The only difference I believe was the bundled WiFi module and aerial.
