Upgraded system, but cant boot kernel

    Hi,

    I did a
    Code:
    dnf upgrade
and all the software installed. However, here was an error message on the console when it completed. And when I try to boot the new kernel I get a black screen. I believe it has something to do with EFI. The old kernel works fine.

    I tried
    Code:
    dracut -f
    but no luck.

Can anyone help me fix this issue pls?

Re: Upgraded system, but cant boot kernel

Just looking at the boot directory and noticed there is no initramfs file for the new kernel.
    For example:
    Code:
    [aubrey@ideacentre boot]$ ls
    config-4.18.16-300.fc29.x86_64
    config-4.19.10-300.fc29.x86_64
    efi
    elf-memtest86+-5.01
    extlinux
    grub2
    initramfs-0-rescue-595d9dcab9e042e1b7dd2db5fdb5676e.img
    initramfs-4.18.16-300.fc29.x86_64.img
    loader
    lost+found
    memtest86+-5.01
    System.map-4.18.16-300.fc29.x86_64
    System.map-4.19.10-300.fc29.x86_64
    vmlinuz-0-rescue-595d9dcab9e042e1b7dd2db5fdb5676e
    vmlinuz-4.18.16-300.fc29.x86_64
    vmlinuz-4.19.10-300.fc29.x86_64

Re: Upgraded system, but cant boot kernel

    I would do,
    Code:
    $ sudo dnf reinstall kernel-4.19.10-300.fc29.x86_64

Re: Upgraded system, but cant boot kernel

    Just found this thread:
    https://unix.stackexchange.com/quest...t-after-update
cause of this is updating the kernel but not the driver's kernel module
    I tried adding
    Code:
    nomodeset
before rhgb quiet in the grub menu to force the fallback graphic adapter.

But no luck. Must be something else

could you please attempt using systemd journal to trace the 'dnf upgrade' failure message and then post that here. with this information to hand (if it actually logged it) people stand a better chance of finding a solution for you

Cant seem to find any trace of the
    Code:
    dnf upgrade
    command in the log viewer.
    Also searching for
    boot
info reveals information only for booting the current kernel. I guess that's because I never actually successfully booted the new kernel.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1530555 may be describing what did and did not happen when the kernel was upgraded. The same workaround should be applicable if this is what happened, regardless of whether the cause was in any way related or not.

    Thanks for the help guys.

I managed to fix the problem by re-installing the OS. I disabled EFI in the BIOS, and enabled legacy mode. The system installed perfectly and update was successful. The new kernel boots fine now.
