    modprobe operation not permitted

    Hi Colleagues,

i am trying to start driver, but it fails saying that:
    Code:
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert '88XXau': Operation not permitted
    dkms thinks it's installed properly:
    Code:
    dkms status
    rtl8812au, 5.3.4, 4.19.6-300.fc29.x86_64, x86_64: installed
should I update any security features to let the driver to be activated ?

It sounds like you don't have permission to use mobprobe, are you running the command as root?

Are you booted in UEFI/BIOS secure boot mode? If so reboot not in secure mode.

    Re: modprobe operation not permitted

modprobe is not affected by whether or not secure boot is enabled. if a module tries to initialize a device using a major number that is already taken, insmod and modprobe will fail with that error message. check what drivers are installed with lsmod (please post the lsmod output here), you may have a generic one loaded for the realtek adaptor already that conflicts with the version you are trying to load in

    Re: modprobe operation not permitted

I have an rtl8821ce driver and it also uses dkms. If I boot in secure mode and sudo modprobe 8821ce I get the exact same error because the kernel driver is out of tree and not signed for secure boot. Turn off secure boot and it works fine.

to be honest, secure mode is not chosen in boot menu of the laptop.
is it the place where it should be managed ?

fair enough, then that makes sense. it wasn't previously mentioned that you are using unsigned drivers.

@yurich - with notebooks the secure boot setting is sometimes hidden until you enter an admin password. if you do this, make a note and do not lose it because they are a nightmare to circumvent if you forget them. alternatively, toggle the secure boot setting and clear the admin password again straight away.
