Strange folders in user's home directory

    Hello,
I am really puzzled by strange special character folder created everytime I login to my shell. I am trying to find the skeleton config to understand is there any strange instruction, but could not find. Any help would be much appreciated.

For example a folder with name like "U" Not able to handle it from command line as not sure what these special characters are. So have to use the GUI to delete everytime I login.

    I am running Fedora 29, KDE, 4.18.16-300.fc29.x86_64 #1 SMP

I have not upgraded to the latest 4.19 kernel as I am running into issues with NVIDIA driver 340xx

    Thanks

Re: Strange folders in user's home directory

The special characters are possibly asian characters which your locale can't handle. You could try running ls through luit to change encoding, e.g "luit -encoding gb18030 ls -l", the gb18030 encoding is simple chinese so you may need to change that to whatever encoding is appropriate.

The presence and persistence of the directory is rather odd though.

Thank you HaydnH. That is really helpful to know. I will use it when I login next time as a random folder will again be created.

I have configured my system same way with all distros, but only with f29 I get such a random folder generation on login. Not sure, is it the skel directory or any other package installed on the system is causing this. It is hard to scout this. I once had similar issue, but that was due to an installation of fortran package. I am not able to get down to the bottom of this as I have installed various development packages as I did in f28.

Your solution will become handy to delete these folders from command line

    Hi!

How did you solve this? I am having the same problem. It puzzles me.

SOLVED: Found a new file in /etc/xdg/autostart: `org.freedesktop.problems.applet.desktop`

I had installed and reinstalled GNOME desktop today (on top of KDE, just to try it) and then uninstalled it. This must have been some leftover for it? no idea really. But removing this file does not create new files anymore on my home.

    Hi !

Upgrading the abrt packages to version 2.11.1-2.fc29 should be the root cause.
    I have filed a bug report : https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1665521

Re: Strange folders in user's home directory

    Hi,
The strange folders are created by X. So I had to clean install all the X related rpms including xorg. When typed 'ls -la' in the strange folder, I found only one folder named '.cache' and in that folder there was only one file with 0 byte size called 'xsession-errors'.

    Hope this helps.

Had these strange folders when login in to Mate Rawhide using sddm as my display manager. Problem did not occur when booting to console and running startx. Switched to lightdm and the problem disappeared.
