    dnf upgrade from 28 to 29 fails silently

    I have two laptops running Fedora. One upgraded from 28 to 29 exactly as expected, but the other refuses to do so.

    Steps I have taken (as root):
    * dnf upgrade --refresh
    * dnf install dnf-plugin-system-upgrade
    * dnf system-upgrade download --refresh --releasever=29
    * dnf system-upgrade reboot

    At this point I get the response: "Error: system is not ready for upgrade"

    Any help solving this conundrum would be appreciated.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

    I don't know what happened in the meantime, but running the exact same sequence of commands today resulted in a reboot, a pause as the system performed whatever it performs on start-up, then a line at top left of the screen saying "System upgrading. This could take a while" or words to that effect. This stayed for 2 or 3 minutes, then the system rebooted into F28.

    What the heck is going on?

    Can I upgrade from a Live USB?

    When it says the system is not ready it usually means there are dependency issues. Try this:

    Code:
    dnf system-upgrade download --refresh --releasever=29 --allowerasing --best option
    Copy what it is going to erase and paste it into a text file so you know what to install the latest version after the upgrade. And of course make sure it isn't going to erase something vitally important.
    I live in my own little world, but it's OK, they know me here.

    Re: dnf upgrade from 28 to 29 fails silently

    Well, that worked far enough to get to the system-upgrade reboot stage.

    I am now back at the situation where the reboot results in a pause as the system performs whatever it performs on start-up, then a line at top left of the screen saying "System upgrading. This will take a while" or words to that effect. This stays for 2 or 3 minutes, then the system reboots back into F28.

    It seems the instructions to trigger the upgrade are being set correctly, but something is going wrong at reboot time. I am not familiar with that process of Fedora, so have no idea of what is wrong or how to fix it. Any suggestions?

    An alternative to the commands you have been using you could instead do the following to see what the conflicts are:
    # dnf --releasever=29 --distro-sync --allowerasing
    This will list all the packages to be upgraded in your terminal screen and also any conflicts if it finds any. If it doesn't find any conflicts it will offer you a Y/n choice to continue.
    The drawback of this route is that none of the old F28 kernels will be removed and you will have to manually update grub with:
    grub2-mkconfig --output=/boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg
    before you manually reboot.
    I assume you are an EFI boot system given the size of the disk.
    I can follow up with how to remove the old kernels once you have booted into F29.

    Thanks jbkt23. I am about to do my weekly backup today, so will try your idea afterward. The problem at the moment is that the reboot works, but the upgrade doesn't (see my previous post). Any ideas?

    The command seems to be dnf distro-sync --releasever=29 --allowerasing - at least, that has been effective in starting the download of 5.5Gb of files. I hope it is what I need to be doing.

    Make backup of current installation and accept upgrade process.

    Glad it worked out for you. When you said 5.5GB was now being downloaded I was shocked. You must of done a full install of all the developer libraries at some point. My upgrades usually are under 2GB.
    Did you get an inkling of what was causing the original hangup?

    Yeah, well, I have to admit I'm a bit of a squirrel and over the years I had installed rather a lot of developer tools, which may have made the difference. I'll go to the back of the class and wear my dunce's hat. "8-)

    No, not a clue. it will be interesting to see what happens next time I have to do an update. Sigh. I love computers.

    If I still have trouble, I'll repave the disk and start again.

    Many thanks for your help and your interest in what is going on.

    Kind regards, Doug

    Re: dnf upgrade from 28 to 29 fails silently

    hi,

    I have an issue regarding the same , currently using fedora 26 and i need to upgrade it to f29, its showing system is not ready for upgrade when i put in "sudo dnf system-upgrade reboot" to reboot the system after downloading the f29 .
    it also shows the error after placing the "# dnf --releasever=29 --distro-sync --allowerasing " as,
    "warning: /var/cache/dnf/fedora-b80ee773d578c9a3/packages/fedora-obsolete-packages-29-22.noarch.rpm: Header V3 RSA/SHA256 Signature, key ID 429476b4: NOKEY
    Curl error (37): Couldn't read a file:// file for file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora-29-i386 [Couldn't open file /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora-29-i386]
    The downloaded packages were saved in cache until the next successful transaction."
    please let me know what i can do to resolve this!
    thank you
