Does Fedora use /etc/fonts/local.conf?

I use Fedora on my notebook and Arch on my desktop. Last night, I found a way to make my fonts display much better on Arch by replacing file /etc/fonts/local.conf with a version from github.

This morning, I decided to try the same thing on Fedora. But, when I went to /etc/fonts, there was no file local.conf. So, I just added the file from github. I rebooted the system. But there was no change to the fonts displayed.

Does Fedora even use that file?

I'm running Fedora 29 with Gnome and Wayland. My Arch system uses Openbox and pure Xorg.

PS - Even after you told me what to look for, it still wasn't easy to find specific documentation. And, even when I found it, there is still misdirection involved.

Misdirection: The documentation points you to /etc/fonts/conf.d. But the actual files are linked from another location (in /usr/share/fonts, I think). IMO, this is all unnecessarily complicated.

There are no symbolic links in /usr/share/fonts.

Finding the local.conf fonts file is super easy, as long as you aren't averse to using the locate command in a terminal.

$ locate local.conf
/etc/fonts/conf.d/51-local.conf
/etc/lvm/lvmlocal.conf
/usr/share/fontconfig/conf.avail/51-local.conf
/usr/share/sssd/sssd.api.d/sssd-local.conf

The /etc/fonts/conf.d/51-local.conf file is a symbolic link to the actual file in /usr/share/fontconfig/conf.avail/51-local.conf.

$ file /etc/fonts/conf.d/51-local.conf
/etc/fonts/conf.d/51-local.conf: symbolic link to /usr/share/fontconfig/conf.avail/51-local.conf

$ file /usr/share/fontconfig/conf.avail/51-local.conf
/usr/share/fontconfig/conf.avail/51-local.conf: XML 1.0 document, ASCII text

you can have a per user .fonts.conf in your /home/ folder which will be picked up by the system

arch uses a modified build of freetype as compared to the standard version fedora uses. anyhow, refer to this fedora 20 xfce guide and do the steps in section 5 and you may get better results with his modified fonts.conf configuration (probably the same one you grabbed from github?). They are of course subjective to personal taste and screen technology though.

no need to apologise that's what we're here for to help with stuff like this, sometimes upstream information can over-complicate matters a bit so blog posts by other users knowledgable of linux tweaking like silvermoon, who can also write in an easy to follow manner can be a godsend
