Fresh F29 install won't relinquish Nouveau drivers

So I install F29 fresh last week, install the nvidia proprietary driver compiled in rpmfusion, check that my config are good (gdm has WaylandEnable=false, kernel boot options in Grub disable the nouveau drivers) but for some reason Nouveau keep coming back. I don't want Nouveau, it crash every time I open firefox.

I've also try following some guide which had me download a .run file from NVidia's website, disable Xorg at boot completely, install their driver and reboot, but that has yield me nothing. I ended up having to reinstall after that.

I've try blacklisting the nouveau driver at boot via kernel option, I've tried any combination of boot parameter, modified config files for building initramfs and re-built that with nouveau disabled, but for some reason Nouveau keep coming back. I run an lsmod and nouveau is right there, with nvidia nowhere to be seen.

If I do nouveau.modesetting=0 then I just get a black screen at boot.

How do I completely obliterate the (broken) Nouveau driver on F29 so I can boot to the NVidia graphic driver? I have also try a temporary Ubuntu install with this and it work perfectly without nouveau, so it seem to be an fedora-only issue at the moment.

    Hardwares:
    Ryzen 5 1600
    16GB Ram
    NVidia GTX 1070

    please post the results of:

    cat /proc/cmdline

That will show your current running kernel's options

    i have

    BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-4.18.16-300.fc29.x86_64 root=UUID=ebf02804-2a06-48fa-befc-402f6c68b858 ro rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau modprobe.blacklist=nouveau nvidia-drm.modeset=1 acpi_backlight=native acpi_osi= LANG=en_US.UTF-8

Re: Fresh F29 install won't relinquish Nouveau drivers

    Result from last boot:

    BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-4.18.16-300.fc29.x86_64 root=UUID=957d08af-7d2f-4785-93f2-13e6ae0ac139 ro rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau modprobe.blacklist=nouveau nvidia-drm.modeset=1 quiet

I've try without `quiet` and without the `blacklist` options but that did no help.

That's what the blacklist is supposed to be doing - don't remove it.

That is the command line that was run - not the result of it.

Exactly HOW did you install the proprietary driver? The install itself should have taken care of all that for you (if you installed the correct one and there were no errors when you ran the install).

Did the rpmfusion repo list a package called "nvidia-detect"? If so, you should install, then run it. It will tell you which driver you need.

I might mention that after installing the proper kmod, my GTX 1050 Ti (on a different machine) then started alerting about an Intel graphics card in my laptop as well - I then had to also install bumblebee in addition and edit it's config file. But that's after getting the nvidia working.

    Change - the only constant.

    How I install the drivers:

Attempt 1: Install rpmfusion repo and install driver using software center. This did not work.

Attempt 2: Install rpmfusion repo and install driver from dnf. This also did not work.

There are no nvidia-detect package, but there are nvidia-modprobe. lspci say I have gtx 1070.

On boot there is message in journalctl say nvidia was not found and that it falls back to nouveau

Re: Fresh F29 install won't relinquish Nouveau drivers

Can you confirm that the commands you used match the following as there are different drivers available for different cards.

    https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/NVIDIA

This driver is suitable for any GPU found in 2010 and later.

    dnf install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia akmod-nvidia
    dnf install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda #optional for cuda/nvdec/nvenc support
    dnf update -y

/!\ Please remember to wait until the kmod get built earch time a new kernel rise up. This can take up to 5 minutes on some systems.
    Also post the output of
    dnf list xorg-x11-drv-nvidia

    I see xorg-x11-drv-nvidia.x86_64 3:410.73-1.fc29 rpmfusion-nonfree-updates

Re: Fresh F29 install won't relinquish Nouveau drivers

Yes, I used the guide at https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/NVIDIA.

AHA! Looking at this page again, they tell
Secure Boot currently blocks the kernel from loading the NVIDIA driver. It must be disabled before booting the OS.
This explain much. I have the secure booting UEFI to disable. This now worked. I am not smart.

The fact you went and re-read the page and figured it out proves that you are smart :-)
