Why doesn't /home use all the space available?

    Dear all,

Can someone please help me with this?

My LVM /home partition has 91GB available.

But when running baobab, it displays that my home folder only has 51GB.

How can I use the entire 91GB available for my home partition?

    Attaching a screenshot.

Thank you very much for your help!

    Hi,

Please show the output of the following commands (logged in as root)

    Code:
    # vgs

    # lvs

    # df -h /home
    Best regards

Re: Why doesn't /home use all the space available?

The size of the filesystem differs from the size of the LVM logical volume. The naming implies that the problem is not an issue of any Fedora tool.

The filesystem is ext4. So you can resize it to the full extend by

    Code:
    # resize2fs -p /dev/mapper/xubuntu-home
The command works also online with the filesystem mounted.
Some graphical tools resize both the partition and filesystem, but that are two different matters.

    Greetings
    Bequimão

Re: Why doesn't /home use all the space available?

Hm, so I ran the command but Disk Usage Analyser still says /home is only 51GB big. Any ideas?

    Code:
    [root@x230 orschiro]# resize2fs -p /dev/mapper/xubuntu-home
    resize2fs 1.44.2 (14-May-2018)
The filesystem is already 22269952 (4k) blocks long. Nothing to do!
    Code:
    [root@x230 orschiro]# vgs
      VG #PV #LV #SN Attr VSize VFree
      xubuntu 1 3 0 wz--n- <118.24g 0
    Code:
    [root@x230 orschiro]# lvs
LV VG Attr LSize Pool Origin Data% Meta% Move Log Cpy%Sync Convert
      home xubuntu -wi-ao---- 84.95g
      root xubuntu -wi-ao---- 20.50g
      swap xubuntu -wi-ao---- <12.79g
    Code:
    [root@x230 orschiro]# df -h /home
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/mapper/xubuntu-home 84G 50G 30G 63% /home

There is no problem at all. You are confusing the amount of disk space used with the amount of free space available. You are using only 51.5 GB in /home/orschiro as Disk Usage Analyzer states but you have 34GiB free as df -h states. Disk Usage Analyzer by its own name shows the usage of a disk and not the free space available.

Also the re-size operation seems to have worked.

    In your previous post:

    Code:
    [root@noname orschiro]# df -h /home
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/mapper/xubuntu-home 62G 50G 8.6G 86% /home

    Now in your latest post:

    Code:
    [root@x230 orschiro]# df -h /home
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/mapper/xubuntu-home 84G 50G 30G 63% /home
Also the name of your machine seems to have changed from noname to x230. Unless you have two separate machines with XUbuntu.

    Dear amiga and Bequimão,

Thanks so much to both of you! You have been of great help and I highly appreciate it.

Now I understand how to interpret Disk Usage Analyser and indeed, I have renamed my system from localhost to X230 in the meanwhile. :-)

    Yours
