Advice - choosing a new printer

Last year my ancient Lexmark printer died and I didn't replace it as I didn't use it much. I decided to get a new one and I like hp printers, a cheap one since it's not used much. Key word being cheap. Can anyone advise me if hp printers play nice with Linux? Or is there a better (cheap) option.
I live in my own little world, but it's OK, they know me here.

    Re: Advice

consumer printing solutions all suck. cannot tell you how many times I bought a printer, used it once every three months, and then two years after I purchased it I turn it on for an adhoc document only to hear it make grinding noises and die. and this is true for all major manufacturers. Even HPs commercial office Jet line is very dissappointing from a quality perspective.

In my experience, HP printers work okay with Fedora. I've had several and no real problems.

go for a laser printer, it will save you money in the long run even though the initial purchase cost is higher. hp officejet pro are okay if you must have another inkjet though but you have to keep an eye on the consumables expiry dates when purchasing them. if you don't use a printer that often laser really is the better option since it won't clog up through dried out cartridges and print heads

I have a HP Color LaserJet Pro M452dn
The dn means it has a wired port instead of wireless.
    It's been good.

My HP 2015-series is an OLD laser printer I bought second hand many years ago, cheaply, use it daily, and it only complains when it runs out of paper and ink. A venerable old friend. Only monochrome though.

    Re: Advice

I have settled on brother printers. My workengine desktop laser system hl2270 does recto-verso, (duplex printing). It gets good use. Cartridges are not expensive from Costco or Amazon. Brothers likes Linux and has the drivers for RH (rpm), debian. Check out the drivers availability before you buy. Can the Linux drivers match functionally, the W10 offerings.

When my printer dies, as all mechanical devices eventually do, my next printer will be a brother color laser.

It's funny. This thread is beginning to remind me of the "what kind of oil do you use?" or "what kind of tires do you buy?" on the motorcycle forums.

I can advise you that my HP3522e was cheap (about $50 at Walmart) and plays nicely with Linux, but it's several years old, and the ink is relatively expensive. I've had mixed luck with 3rd-party inks.

yes it is going down that avenue. since it's not really going to improve it may be time to close it.

anyhow, cheap is relative in printer terms because 'cheap' printers have the most expensive consumables. It's how the manufacturers deliberately operate. With some 'cheap' inkjets it actually works out cheaper to buy a new printer with more starter cartridges than replacement inks.
