    Amixer is broken on my system

    I normally use line-out (analog).
    The speakers work fine as lineouts
    The headphone jack stopped working with an error message about Headphone being an unknown keyword.
    Now get this message
    $ amixer -c0 set Headphone unmute 100%
    amixer: Unable to find simple control 'Headphone',0
    Fedora 28

    As well, Headphones were previously working in parallel with lineout. Now they are shown separately.

    In the past, I would turn down the external speaker volume and just listen to the headphones, or I would listen to both.

    How to undo whatever?

    Yes, PulseAudio is running on my system.
    Maybe just the names have changed.

    Re: Amixer is broken on my system

    I found something in /etc/modprobe

    # This file is nojack a Takasi Iwai patch
    # to be copied to /lib/firmware/alsa/
    # if alsa does not exist in ...firmware, create it

    #[codec]
    #0x10ec0888 0x104382fe 0
    #[hint]
    #jack_detect = no
    #
    #cd to /etc/modprobe.d and add the following:
    #edit 50-jack.conf with the following one line
    #options snd-hda-intel patch=alsa/nojack
    #save and reboot
    # amixer -c0 set Headphone unmute 100%

    I must have done part2 at sometime recently (without the #comments), I restored same and sound is back.
    I will likely have to do the same for Fedora29

    Re: Amixer is broken on my system

    This is from a mirrored system where amixer does not work to enable headphones.
    I will report below, what it shows where headphones do work.

    Code:
    leslie@RFRSDE ~]$ amixer -c 0 contents
    numid=4,iface=CARD,name='Keep Interface'
      ; type=BOOLEAN,access=rw------,values=1
      : values=off
    numid=2,iface=MIXER,name='Mic Capture Switch'
      ; type=BOOLEAN,access=rw------,values=1
      : values=on
    numid=3,iface=MIXER,name='Mic Capture Volume'
      ; type=INTEGER,access=rw---R--,values=1,min=0,max=2,step=0
      : values=1
      | dBminmax-min=30.00dB,max=50.00dB
    numid=1,iface=PCM,name='Capture Channel Map'
      ; type=INTEGER,access=r----R--,values=1,min=0,max=36,step=0
      : values=0
      | container
