Slow transfer & errors from data DVD to solid state hard drive

I've discovered a couple of odd problems doing a bulk transfer
(using cp) of the contents of a data DVD to
the (solid state) hard drive of my new 64-bit system.
First, it takes a long time -- many seconds per 100 MB. Second, I got
some "error reading" occurrences. After the bulk copy was done
I verified that the data on the DVD are good, and I could do
an individual cp on each failed file successfully. The DVD was
made on my F12 system using the data DVD option of k3b. I could
not learn online how to mount a data DVD on recent Fedora, but it
turned out that my old alias for mounting a CDROM (mount -t iso9660)
worked, so I used it. Please advise.

writing flash devices is slow. You just don't notice it because when only writing a few files the IO is cached and the kernel finishes the job after the command prompt returns.

use dd to copy the cdrom to an ISO image on the main hard disk, then mount the ISO image using the loop device and copy from it to the flash disk.

another source of slowdown is if the cdrom and flash disk are both on the USB channel.

did you read the post tempest? there's no usb devices involved here. they are copying from DVD to an internal SSD

@cpacker - check the cables are connected properly for both the optical drive and the SSD.

my bad....sorry....either too much beer, or not enough while reading.

So after reading it seems much more like just a hellofalot of IO errors on the DVD media he's trying to access then, or possibly a VERY FRAGMENTED image where there is much seeking going on on the DVD....which makes me wonder if the DVD was multi-session.
