VLC not playing video (only sound) in *.mov files

VLC in Fedora 26 would play my old *.mov files. After upgrading to Fedora 28, VLC now only plays the sound and not the video of the files. When I play the *.mov, the video codec listed in the information is h263 (these are files from a camera bought in 2004).
SMPlayer can play the files with now problem. How can I correct this in VLC?

Don't really know can this work, but maybe you can take h263 codec from SMPlayer files and put it in /usr/lib/vlc/plugin/codec/.
I seems vlc only has h264 and h265 codecs.

Interesting thought. However, I can't seem to find where smplayer keeps its codecs and a search of google doesn't produce anything for a codec of h263.

Couldn't find neither. Again, I don't know can this work(or is this even right place), but here's list of smp codecs and this site has mplayer(the first line in site says mp is some kind of base for smp) binary codecs downloads, so maybe you can find it from there. (It talks a lot about windows, but I assume that linux downloads are for linux)

    Hello everyone.

all you need to do is install aall the codecs from the software Center.
That will solve the WMV issue with VLC and Others.

    then make test here:

    Hi FFedora,
Just what is the image titled "Add-ons" a picture of? Also, the issue is with mov files not wmv.

Re: VLC not playing video (only sound) in *.mov files

    Hello dang27.

the image is from the " Software Center",To cover codecs.
    now about MOV.....

Now I have done the Beta Testing for the Option to watch .mov files.
I have download sample from that site for testing the option for solution for here:

    http://file-examples.com/index.php/s...iles-download/

Now like you can see it is working file with .mov format.
now After I have said that, you will need in anyway to install all the plug ins from the Software Center (like in the image).
Then when all done =>close the Software Center and Open dnfdragora.
in dnfdragora =>change the option to show x86_64,and in the search box add to search = quicktime.

install those 2 packages that I have mark for you.
that will let you see in "VLC,MPlayer,SMPlayer,Media Player" - .mov files.

    well....hope that help.

Re: VLC not playing video (only sound) in *.mov files

I installed the two libquicktime* (using dnf), however, did not install any more plugins. I have the xfce spin of fedora and don't have the software center. What are the names of the codecs? I can play the sample *.movs that you linked too with vlc. However, they don't need the older H263 codec, as my old files do. It seems to me, the apps that use ffmpeg (smplayer and mpv, I think ) can still play the older H263 style *.mov

Re: VLC not playing video (only sound) in *.mov files

    Hello dang27.

Let's go here step by step with that Answer.

1 - h.263 is cover by the new Codecs of Fedora (on the net I will need to use flash player):

    http://liberty.princeton.edu/videos/h263.php

Like you can see the samples are working there.

2 - to add the Software Center (Gnome Software Center - To get all Codecs Support),
will install on your system the Gnome Desktop as well.
But that will cover all the Codecs that you will need to have to play what ever you like.
You can find the package to your arch here:
    https://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/s...gnome-software

so it is up to you how to cover your system support in Multimedia Codecs needs.

    Hope that help.
