    /var is exploding

    Up until flatpack introduction, the installation and release notes for /var stated that three to four gigs would be adequate. I set aside 10gigs. I use Fedora 28 Gnome, and du -h /var gave me a shock. The size of /var was 13gigs, and that size is obtained after I purged many many log files.

    What are we to expect for Fedora 29? Do I need to buy a new SSD (My current SSD is sized at 128gigs) or go back to a terrabyte drive.

    $ sudo bash
    # cd /var
    # du -sk * | sort -n

    see where the space is being taken up. I "suspect" it could be localized dnf cached rpm packages. but yeah, recent linux/fedora is spiraling out of control.

    Raised bugzilla report #1475447 with RH. I think it is two, perhaps three applications.
    freedesktop,
    gnome,
    and perhaps some junk left behind by dnf.

    Hehe. No gnome, dnf without caching.
    Code:
    [root@owl /var]# du -sh .

    Re: /var is exploding

    No, the problem I noticed is lots of space used in /var/log/journal

    du -k --max-depth=1 /var/log/
    966936 /var/log/journal
    995720 /var/log
    so about 1GB in the journal/ directory and only 30MB for all the rest of /var/log

    So you can make a change to /etc/systemd/journald.conf to have these lines:

    SystemMaxUse=300M
    SystemMaxFileSize=50M
    or experiment with other values. Those reduced my 960MB to about 230MB after restarting systemd-journald

    systemctl restart systemd-journal

    du -ks /var/log/journal/
    229480 /var/log/journal/
    Time wise I noticed my journals with the old settings went all the way back to November 2017, which seems excessive for defaults to me. Maybe server admins want such long logs. After shrinking to 230MB, my oldest log was then about June 15,2018

    Re: /var is exploding

    Thank you marko:
    Code:
    [root@owl /etc/systemd]# cat /etc/systemd/journald.conf
    <snip>
    SystemMaxUse=100M
    <snip>
    SystemMaxFileSize=50M
    <snip>
    Then:
    Code:
    [root@owl /etc/systemd]# systemctl restart systemd-journald
    [root@owl /etc/systemd]# du -sh .
    84K
    [root@owl /etc/systemd]# du -sh /var
    443M    /var
    Note: /var down from 827M (post #4) to 443M; systemctl restart systemd-journald.
