Driver for realtek RTL8723BS wifi/bluetooth chip

    Hello everyone.

I had installed Fedora 28 to the lynx7 tablet. This tablet has the realtek RTL8723BS wifi/bluetooth chip.

Everything including wifi work fine except that there isn't any bluetooth adapter in the system.
    bt-adapter -l finds nothing.

Fedora automatically loads the r8723bs kernel module but does not load any bluetooth related modules.
    lsmod | grep -E 'bluetooth|bt' shows nothing.

I gathered all data about the problem here: http://vps2.happyuser.info/lynx7-problem

I think perhaps the r8723bs module is bad or very old and is not fully compatible with modern linux.

    What can I do?

I had that chipset when my notebook was new (see my username). I had to use an experimental driver from GIT. It worked, but it still didn't perform well, so I threw it away and got an Intel 8265.

If you want to try to get the development version of the driver, look for it under lfinger (the username of the developer).

Tim, where can I get the development version of the driver?
I found this app only: https://github.com/lwfinger/rtl8723bs_bt
    and it does not work.

In start_bt.sh I changed the line
    ./rtk_hciattach -n -s 115200 $TTY rtk_h5 > hciattach.txt 2>&1 &
    to
    ./rtk_hciattach -n -s 115200 $TTY rtk_h5
    for easy output view.

The /dev/ttyS4 does not exist on the tablet.
    Code:
    root@lynx7:~# ls /dev/ttyS4
ls: cannot access '/dev/ttyS4': No such file or directory

    root@lynx7:/home/sergiy/rtl8723bs_bt# ./start_bt.sh
    Using device /dev/ttyS4 for Bluetooth
Can't open serial port: No such file or directory
Can't initialize device: No such file or directory
With /dev/ttyS5 this app does not work.

I think perhaps the /dev/ttyS5 is not related to the RTL8723BS device.
    Code:

Oh , gosh, I'm sorry. I don't remember that level of detail. It was almost two years ago when I went through all that.

But, I think you have found what you need. I wish I could be more help.

The r8723bs module is from realtek corporation.
Maybe I need to blacklist the r8723bs module and try to configure the loading of some other modules? What?

You may need to compile this for bluetooth support as it is clearly not included in the 8723BS module merged into the linux kernels, instructions are in the readme at the bottom of the page:

Re: Driver for realtek RTL8723BS wifi/bluetooth chip

Dear antikythera, of course I compiled the rtk_hciattach program. I cloned that git repo and issued the following commands from the rtl8723bs_bt directory:
    make
    sudo make install
    ------------------------------------------------
Maybe the r8723bs module uses the wrong firmware? How to determine what firmware file is used by that module?

    Hi.
In 4.20.6 kernel the RTL8723BS chip in my tablet works normally. The wifi and bluetooth works.
Please explain what I have to do.

Have you tried entering the SSID manually in Network Manager? If so does the adaptor then connect properly to the network?

It seem like the manual connection to wifi network dont work.
I created the new wifi connection and entered the SSID of my ADSL router.

Then I clicked "connect to hidden wifi network" in networkmanager and selected the connection I created before.
And nothing happened. The connection had not established. It even did not ask the password for wifi.
I did not get any error message.
    I attempted twice.

that was addressed at itknight, but presumably given the lack of response they had the same outcome as you when they tried
