Fedora 28 performance problems on Dell 7510

I have been running Fedora since over one year ago on my Dell Precision 7510. This is a $4,000 laptop. It ran well and quickly until Fedora 28 upgrade. Now, it is laggy and slow on the keyboard. Keystrokes get delayed and then it will do multiple repeats of a key at random. The touchpad and mouse responses are laggy. It is very disappointing to have such an expensive machine running this way. It affects all apps including the terminal command window. Some apps are more affected if they use more CPU, such as Firefox.

System monitor shows no unusual CPU activity.

I already submitted this issue to Bugzilla, but have not gotten any helpful replies.

Any similar experiences? Ideas for how to track down the cause?

Maybe a fresh install instead of upgrade?

I would like to figure out the root cause of the problem, just out of curiosity and to see if it could be repaired. If I can't ever find out then I will try a fresh install.

you may get better performance with the nvidia proprietary drivers from rpmfusion

pay attention to the special notes about Wayland though.

The nouveau driver would not make so much difference, especially on a high end laptop like this. Try to look for any .xsession-error files in your home directory

I don't see any .xsession-error files, FYI. However, I did have a hard time typing this response, because of the repeated keys and keystroke delays.

Folks on Bugzilla are saying my problem could be a version of this bug:
    https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1218402

But I don't know how to run "TaskBar" since my system does not appear to use it at all.

Re: Fedora 28 performance problems on Dell 7510

Just FYI, recent updates to Fedora 28 have seemingly fixed whatever the problem was. So the situation is now resolved, I am happy. But I still have no clue what did cause or could have caused the behavior.

My guess is the kernel updated and the embedded module "dell-laptop" was updated and fixed your problems.
