Lost buttons in Cinnamon Window borders

I use Fedora 28 with Cinnamon. I suddenly lost the buttons in the window borders. Trying to replace the window border didn't fix it.

How can I fix it or diagnose the problem?

    Thanks

    my $0.02:

although I don't use Cinnamon, I have found that removing /home/myhomefolder/.cache usually solves a bunch of GUI issues.

Re: Lost buttons in Cinnamon Window borders

The Cinamon desktop system actually consists of various programs:
Xorg, the display server (also serves the keyboard and mouse)
    Muffin, the window manager
    Cinamon, the desktop environment

The windows decorations (border and buttons) are provided by the window manager.

So what happened is that Muffin (a fork of the Gnome Window Manager) crashed and needs to be restarted.

Well, I rebooted a few times since this problem and nothing changed. Also, if I understand well, Muffin is the WM configured for my system but is not running according to wmctrl. See below:

    [root@TENNESSINE ~]# wmctrl -m
    Name: Mutter (Muffin)
    Class: N/A
    PID: N/A
Window manager's "showing the desktop" mode: N/A

What is the service that starts it? systemctl list-unit-files did give me clue about it.

    Thanks,

    You don't have to reboot.

The windowing system is started/restarted when you log out/in.

If you boot into text mode, then you can run startx and everything should come up.

If you can figure out what exactly is the name of Muffin (gdm?) then you can run it manually from the text login terminal. If it crashes immediately then you can see what it complains about.

I decided to reinstall everything as all this didn't make sense. Which was a good thing because since the first installation was from Fedora 26. I upgraded to F26 then F27 and F28.
