Nvidia driver not working on the latest kernel (>4.16.7)

    Hi All,
I have dell xpx 15 laptop with GTX 1050 card. Running Fedora 27 with bumblebee + nvidia-driver-396.24-1.fc27 from negativo..
Everything was fine on 4.16.7 kernel version. Then the update came and optirun started to produce error:

kernel: nvidia-nvlink: Nvlink Core is being initialized, major device number 237
kernel: NVRM: The NVIDIA GPU 0000:01:00.0 NVRM: (PCI ID: 10de:1c8d) installed in this system has
NVRM: fallen off the bus and is not responding to commands.
kernel: nvidia: probe of 0000:01:00.0 failed with error -1
kernel: NVRM: The NVIDIA probe routine failed for 1 device(s).
kernel: NVRM: None of the NVIDIA graphics adapters were initialized!
kernel: nvidia-nvlink: Unregistered the Nvlink Core, major device number 237

Thing is that I can boot back to 4.16.7 , where everything is working as expected. So it seems some change in kernel messed up.. However googling does not give any possible solution.

    Hmm, in my case:
    Code:
    [root@nova ~]# uname -a
    Linux nova 4.17.3-200.fc28.x86_64 #1 SMP Tue Jun 26 14:17:07 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    inxi:
    Card: NVIDIA GP106 [GeForce GTX 1060 6GB] bus-ID: 09:00.0
Display Server: X.org 1.19.6 driver: nvidia
               Resolution: 1920x1080@60.00hz, 1920x1080@60.00hz, 1920x1080@60.00hz
OpenGL: renderer: GeForce GTX 1060 6GB/PCIe/SSE2 version: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 390.59 Direct Render: Yes
I am using Xfce over Xorg.
And it all works fine here.

If you're using the proprietary drivers you will need to re-install them every time the kernel changes.
    Change - the only constant.

Hi, I think that nvidia-akmod does that automatically:

dnf list installed | grep kmod-nvidia
    akmod-nvidia.x86_64 3:396.24-1.fc27 @fedora-nvidia
    kmod-nvidia-4.16.15-200.fc27.x86_64.x86_64 3:396.24-1.fc27 @@commandline
    kmod-nvidia-4.16.7-200.fc27.x86_64.x86_64 3:396.24-1.fc27 @@commandline
    kmod-nvidia-4.17.3-100.fc27.x86_64.x86_64 3:396.24-1.fc27 @@commandline

Previously it was working properly with each update till I bumped into 4.16.15 kernel update where it stopped working..

As per "And it all works fine here" - I presume difference is that I'm using bumblebee, I think that something in powerscheme changed with kernel update which bumblebee cannot cope with...?

Apparently he is using: "bumblebee + nvidia-driver-396.24-1.fc27 from negativo"

EDIT: and I am using kmod-nvidia from rpmfusion, so maybe my information does not even apply since he's using bumblebee.

Yes, I'm using bumblebee due to Optimus.. So akmod is compiling driver for each kernel automatically (i can see them on the list of packets):
    Code:
yum list installed | grep nvidia
    akmod-nvidia.x86_64 3:396.24-1.fc27 @fedora-nvidia

It was all working previously till 4.16.15 update. Probably there is something with powermanagement changed, which breaks bumblebee. I've tried PCI pm off, and switching powertop off. I can see on journactl that kernel switches card into Active state via bbswitch successfully

P.S. It seems there is a "moderation", so sorry for repeating answer, I thought previous was wiped

I have the same laptop and for me it's working. I'm on Fedora 28 though with 4.17.3 and I'm not using the akmod but the dkms version. Did you try reinstalling the driver? If that doesn't work, maybe try the dkms version.
