Not all Sata cables are alike.

Suddenly today, I started to get error messages about one of my 5 disks. The bios reported an issue with port ata4, and then Linux reported other issues.
At first I thought it was a corrupted partition, but then, after some checking (swapping drive 4 with drive 5), I attributed it to the sata cable.
The sata cable I had, appeared to have extra thick insulation, which made the cable quite stiff.
The cable's stiffness put pressure on the plug/connector so that a sata cable contact was not completed.

I surmise that as the problem was the cable stiffness, since replacing that cable with a "thinner" one which also had metal clips at both ends to insure contact pressure, solved that problem.

The cable I removed is still good, if used where the connections at either end are not under tension.
Perhaps it's better that I discard that one and not try to reuse it.

I had a similar issue in my old box, when a cable harness unlodged itself and put pressure on a SATA connector on the mobo.
I reckon those plugs, i.e the contacts, should be longer, or fit more snuggly into the sockets. Badly thought. Or the road to an even newer SATA.bis connector, which will force us all to upgrade once again lol.

I have deferred to upgrading my 2008 Desktop. My next system I intend to purchase will have 8 cpu (16threads), and 16gigs of ddr4. I am doing mostly compiling C code or C++ or using LibreOffice, so ... thus far, I have no need to upgrade, other than "Its time to treat myself to something new".

On a hardware topic, if cellphone vendors can make reversable sockets for the charger cable, sata cabling should be reingineered to be similar. Start with the Motherboard end, and later, to the SSD or Hard disk interfaces.

Leslie, cables are cheap enough. Just replace them or at the least, the offending one.

The early SATA cables didn't have the metal clip, adding it was a great idea as i recall more than one SATA cable connector working its way loose.

SATA cables come in1.5, 3.0 & 6 Gbps data transfer speed.
