    I guess the problem is related to wifi-wext driver or regulatory.db

Is there a way to remove all the WiFi modules from the kernel?
    You're barking up the wrong tree here. First, you may be confused as to just what a "kernel module" is. There are three things you can do to configure the available components into a Linux kernel. 1) Nothing: Do not include this component at all. 2) Include this component and build it into the kernel core itself. 3) Include this component but don't build it into the kernel core, instead, build it as a "module".

    A kernel module comes as a separate file, one that can be loaded into the kernel (stuck on if you will) on demand when and if it might be needed. This is how almost all, if not all, hardware driver code is built, as modules. So, if your system doesn't have any wifi capability, you won't have any wifi driver loaded and running. A file just sitting on your hard drive and doing nothing at all can't possibly influence your running system just because it exists.

    If you do a "lsmod" command you will see your loaded kernel modules. In your case, you'll only see a kernel module for your wired ethernet connection and probably one or two others needed to support it. On my desktop PC with no wifi and only a wired connection, it's my realtek r8169 driver.
    Code:
    $ lsmod | grep 8169
    r8169                  94208  0
    mii                    16384  1 r8169
    Code:
    $ modinfo r8169 | egrep "filename|description"
    filename:       /lib/modules/4.17.3-200.fc28.x86_64/kernel/drivers/net/ethernet/realtek/r8169.ko.xz
    description: RealTek RTL-8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver
    But to actually answer the question, yes. Just rebuild the kernel without any wifi support at all.

    Re: KDE frozen after update Fedora 28

    I downloaded a Debian package and copied regulatory.db and regulatory.db.p7s to /lib/firmware directory and the error ceased on the log file, however my system hangs when I plug the WIFI adapter but there's no reference to this even in the messages log file (I plugged the adapter at 17:38:00 and my system crashed at 17:38:05).

    Code:

    How can I solve it? It's surely a hardware compatibility issue. Due the fact the r8188eu module is used by lots of adapters is strange there is not too many people reporting it.

    Re: KDE frozen after update Fedora 28

    Hi Luispa and Pablo,
    I don't have a wifi adapter on either of my "troubled" machines. One thing I think we may have/had in common, looking at Luispa's code, is an issue with network manager which had also raised issues on my machines. I'm now booting into an older kernel (4.16.15-300.fc28.x86_64) and the machines are stable and both KDE and Gnome run w/o issue. I don't know if this'll help you or not; I'm near my limits of troubleshooting. My understanding is that network manager is an add-on while the wifi drivers are modules within the kernel. (Do I have that right, Pablo?)
    Whatever is causing the problem(s) on my machines seems to be one or more packages loading after I sign into KDE; Gnome loads and runs fine. Looking at the dmesg log, I don't see where KDE or Gnome start to load. My thinking is that if I can find that point, I might be able to identify the "problem" package(s) - am I even looking in the right place/log?
    Thanks.

    dmesg deals with hardware related events on your system. Launching a desktop environment is strictly a software event. Look to the journal log to view logged events relating to starting up your desktop environment. Something like,
    Code:
    journalctl -b0 | grep -i KDE

    What should I do to get more information about this issue? Should I create a new thread in a different forum? or here with a different subject?

    Re: KDE frozen after update Fedora 28

    I ran journalctl -b0 | grep -i KDE as recommended and got the following results. I see what appear to be a number of "issues" but don't know how to interpret/analyze them. Hopefully, someone sees a solution embedded in the lengthy code. Due to length restrictions, I'm splitting the code between two postings. (I haven't done any upgrades since I started this string, if that is of importance.) Thanks again, everyone.

    Thank you for your advice. I created a new thread in a more specific forum: https://forums.fedoraforum.org/showt...27#post1810327

    I'll share the solution here if I find how to solve it.

    I never found the actual problem but with the latest kernel update, the problem has resolved itself. Presumably, whatever conflict existed has now been eliminated. Thanks to you who offered suggestions. Now I just have to figure out how to mark this as "solved"...

    Good for you! The r8188eu issue was not solved with the last update so I assume the cause of our problems is not the same. For marking the thread as "SOLVED" I guess you should edit your first post and change the post title.
