UPDATE- What I'm reading suggests we can't expect WPA3 on existing laptops, I was hoping it would be doable as a software change to the OS wireless drivers or as a BIOS flash but it's not looking that way.

the same applied with the advent of WPA2. It's doubtful a firmware update will enable older chips to be WPA3 compliant. howtogeek have a reasonable writeup about the differences and what you'll eventually need to make use of WPA3. It's not just client's wireless devices that will need replacing, you'll also need a new router as per transitioning from WEP and WPA to WPA2 in the past. new WPA3 certified devices will start hitting the shelves later this year.
