    Re: Recover deleted files

Files names of all the recovered files have also been changed during the recovery process. I am really in need of help now so that I can get back what I want, thanks.

    Re: Recover deleted files

Just found a couple of sites, which seem to clarify the fact the PhotoRec does not keep the original filenames.

How to get the original filenames ?
If the filesystem isn't damaged, try TestDisk. TestDisk may be able to undelete the file with its filename. It works for FAT, NTFS and ext2.

In some case, the filename is stored in the file itself, PhotoRec try to recover the filename in this case but most of the time, PhotoRec can't. PhotoRec uses the logical sector number to create the filename, it appends the original filename or the document title when possible, the filename ends by the file extension.

    Another site....

Yes, PhotoRec creates new names and doesn't recover directories.

    Re: Recover deleted files

I used TestDisk to recover files from an internal hard drive which I connected externally to another PC. With PhotoRec all the file names are wrong and the original folder structure doesn't exist.

    What can be done?
its probably with carving and selecting data since testdisk takes a naive/aggressive approach to file recovery. It tends to ignore the filesystem and just collect and reassemble chunks of image data.

Photorec doesn't read the original filesystem, so it doesn't see what the original filename was.

It just reads all the data on the drive, copying out files "magically" when it sees one (you'd have to delve into it's website &/or source code to see exactly how it works, it's close enough to "magic" for me ;-)

    The only solutions are to:

rename the files yourself, using their contents as a guide (easy for MP3's, not so easy for others), or
use a different tool to recover the files, maybe TestDisk (by the same author), that's only if the filesystem is somewhat intact.
