    Problem changing timezone on F 25

    For various reasons, I'm still running F 25 on my desktop with Xfce. I'm going to be moving permanently to another time zone in the next few months and even if I upgrade to F 28, it will be by upgrading, not clean install. I don't know why, but running the GUI program to change the timezone doesn't work from a menu (gnome-control-center datetime) but did this morning from a terminal as a test. Now, it doesn't. The man page claims that datetime is valid, but the program rejects it and doesn't show anything related to setting the date or time. Not only that, dnf can't find any package that provides it. Does anybody know what's going on, or what program I should be using?

    See "man timedatectl" You can do everything there, including setting the time zone. The timedatectl command is installed by the systemd package.

    Code:
    $ timedatectl status
                          Local time: Sat 2018-06-09 20:20:45 EDT
                      Universal time: Sun 2018-06-10 00:20:45 UTC
                            RTC time: Sun 2018-06-10 00:20:45
                           Time zone: America/New_York (EDT, -0400)
           System clock synchronized: no
    systemd-timesyncd.service active: no
                     RTC in local TZ: no

    OK, that gives me a way to change the time zone. However, I'd still like to know why the GUI method suddenly stopped working.

    You could try installing libtimezonemap and see if that works for you.
    Code:
    Description : libtimezonemap is a time zone map widget for Gtk+. The widget displays a world
                 : map with a highlighted region representing the selected time zone, and the
                 : location can be changed by clicking on the map.
                 :
                 : This library is a fork of the of the code from gnome-control-center's datetime
                 : panel, which was itself a fork of Ubiquity's timezone map.

    I already have it, but there's no program to run. How do I use it?

    Re: Problem changing timezone on F 25

    Yeah, sorry. I just looked at the files that package installs and there is no runable executable, just a shared object (.so) file and its support files. So it's used as a back end component to whatever gui package that might put it to use. In any event, the cli timedatectl method can easily handle the job.

    Interestingly though, on both my F27 Xfce laptop and F28 Xfce desktop PC, there is no longer any date and time application in the Xfce applications menu. Not sure just when that disappeared, but it's been an awful long time since I had any occasion to want or need to use it.

    You still haven't addressed my real question: why did the program gnome-control-center bring up the time and date panel the first time I used it, and then stopped accepting the argument? Not only that, once the program comes up, that panel doesn't exist!

    I can't answer any questions about gnome-control-center since I don't use it, and never have.

    Re: Problem changing timezone on F 25

    I learned from a mailing list that the package name is simply control-center. Using dnf to remove and then install it got it working properly, at least for the moment.

    I must not have looked very hard. Applications > Administration > System-Config-Date
    Yes, graphical way to change timezone. The laptop is now running F28.

    But then, check out the package that installed it.
    Code:
    $ rpm -qf /usr/share/applications/system-config-date.desktop
    system-config-date-1.10.9-2.fc24.noarch

    Actually, in XFCE, you can right click on the clock in the panel and select properties and there is a timezone setting field there. Not sure if that overrides the system setting or not, though.

    I just set mine systemwide and not worry about setting it in the desktop.

    I just noticed that something when I originally installed set up a symlink in /etc

    Code:
    lrwxrwxrwx.   1 root     root         35 Feb 27  2013 localtime -> /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Chicago
    Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the universe are pointed away from Earth?

    By gosh golly... there sure is. But then, I hadn't any reason to look at the properties on the panel clock in Xfce for years. If that changed it system wide, then I would expect to be prompted for root password I would think. If it only changed it for the user environment, that would be real handy for someone who traveled a lot with their laptop allowing them to easily see local time when out of their home timezone but not messing up the system time when returning home.

    I use Xfce, but not that clock, preferring Orage. Thanx anyway.

    I just happened to have orage package installed on my laptop, but don't use it. I just launched it. It too can be used to change the timezone. The timezone is set by /ect/localtime, which is a symlink to one of the entries in /usr/share/zoneinfo.

    Edit: Well I do use orage calendar, which is component of orage. Uninstalling orage killed orage calendar. Had to reinstall it.

    I think that's just for that instance of Orage so that you can have several copies running in different timezones. I'd have to experiment to see what it does to the system clock.
