No acceptable C compiler found in $PATH

    Good Day,

I'm a newbie to Linux, so I'm not as experienced as some of you are. I'm trying to get experienced and one of the things that I was trying to do is download Emacs. I'm using Fedora12, so I'm sure I might here to upgrade my version. I tried downloading it from the mirror sites: (yum install emacs), but it never worked, so I downloaded the FTP version. Then, I extracted it to my desktop (tar xyvz filename), and it did extract it to my desktop.

The issue that I'm having is, it creates a folder with a configure script, and when I try to run in (./configure), I get this error message: No acceptable C compiler found in $PATH

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

I did try yum install gcc, and that didn't work as well. It try numerous mirror sites. Then, it finally gives up.

You've answered your own question. The reason is that virtually no one supplies packages for Fedora 12 - only for the current versions.
    Change - the only constant.

Re: No acceptable C compiler found in $PATH

You should have a file called config.log in the same path as the configure script which will give you more info, I'll bet is has a pkg-config command or similar looking for gcc greater than a certain version which fedora 12 can't provide.

You could download an old emacs to suit the old Fedora (and therefore gcc) version - but you're better off upgrading Fedora for all the security fixes. From 12 -> 28 you probably want to do a fresh install as well, doing incrementals would be a pain.

The current version of Fedora is 28. about 6+ years ago support for Fedora 12 was terminated. The recommendation is to install a more current version of Fedora.

Re: No acceptable C compiler found in $PATH

All, thanks for the replies. I will download the latest version. I use all of my operating systems in VMware, so I will work on this and reply, but I will also experiment with the pkg-config file you were talking about, Haydn, and I will look into the pkg-config command, for experience.

    Thanks
