Virtualbox guest additions not working as advertised

The news releases about Fedora 28 claim that the VirtuablBox guest additions should work out of the box.

    This is not the case.

I created a new Fedora 28 VM using VirtualBox 5.2.12 on Windows 10.

Upon attempting to create shared drives I consistently got a message about the additions not being installed. I finally decided to do a dnf update. dnf confirms that the the guest additions are installed. After several more reboots, the message is now gone but only one of my shared folders is visible in /media (as root).

    Is there a solution?

Try the latest Virtualbox from the Oracle web site.

Are your shared folders real folders or symlinks?

Re: Virtualbox guest additions not working as advertised

I am running the latest official VirtualBox download 5.2.12 r122591 on a fully up-to-date Windows 10 server. The windows host folders are not symbolic links.

I did encrypt my Fedora 28 workstation install.

The host folders are all on the Windows D drive (which is not encrypted).

All of the folders are shared as auto mount and make permanent.

The one shared folder that shows up in /media, /media/sf_common, is in fact empty.

I can just confirm I have similar issues (without using an encrypted Fedora 28... but I do not think that matters). I have tried to install some other pre-built kernels with more updates from the "Virtual guest integration" project. It solved clipboard integration but never the shared folder. Now when updating my Fedora 28 the clipboard works in the default kernel, still not shared folders.

I had the same issue. I reinstalled Fedora 27 and mounted my shared folder from my Windows host. After that, I then upgraded to Fedora 28 and the shared folder still works.

Am I missing something here? If you are using WIN 10 as the HOST, how could you possibly utilize something built into LINUX?
Wouldn't you NEED to be using LINUX AS THE HOST for it to work? Isn't the guest additions a HOST thing?

Seems to me, on a W10 host, you would have to MANUALLY install it.

Re: Virtualbox guest additions not working as advertised

The Guest Additions are a GUEST thing, independent of the host. VirtualBox doesn't care what the host OS is when creating guest VMs. I've run Linux Mint (currently) and Windows 7 as hosts, with Win7/Mint/Xubuntu/OpenIndiana/Android as guests with no host-specific issues other than the ones related here.

Chilly Willy, I have a Windows 10 host. On it, I have a folder on my desktop that I tried to share to my Fedora 28 guest. It did not work. So, I installed Fedora 27 on a guest, setup the shared folder and then upgraded to Fedora 28 and the shared folder continued to work. That is all I am saying.

Well, maybe VB IS able to grab it out regardless if linux is host or guest, I wasn't sure... that's why I asked.

Re: Virtualbox guest additions not working as advertised

Just wanted to mention two more things.

    a) ran dnf update today. Still only seeing one of my 3 shares in /media
    b) I have several different Linux VMs running in VirtualBox, including Fedora 27, all of which have no problems with sharing several drives and clipboard where I have manually mounted the guest additions iso and installed the guest additions, on both Windows 7 and Windows 10 hosts.

My hope was with Fedora 28 advertising dnf updated VirtualBox guest additions, the need for periodically mounting the iso and running the installer would no longer exist. This would allow me to have a Fedora VM that doesn't have kernel headers installed. Also, periodically in the past, the kernel headers would change before Oracle released a new guest additions, resulting in a VM where guest additions wouldn't build and breaking X windows. I was hoping to be past all that.

Re: Virtualbox guest additions not working as advertised

The problem here is Fedora28 keeps going forward. While VirtualBox 5 is releasing at a slower pace. Integrating the guest additions into Fedora won't solve that*.
It worked for me on Fedora28 until I did the very first dnf update. So maybe people upgrading form 27 to 28 have an older configuration.

    * yet we are only users and won't solve anything either. Just have to wait for the shared folder feature be merged in Fedora

then you potentially don't have the virtualbox modules updating along with the kernels, you need to use akmods to achieve this:
