    Pictures folder is missing

    Hi Friends,

    I am running Fedora 27 64 bit Workstation. Suddenly, the default Pictures folder has gone missing. Can you please help?

    Code:
    [john@localhost ~]$ cat .config/user-dirs.dirs |grep -i xdg
    # This file is written by xdg-user-dirs-update
    # Format is XDG_xxx_DIR="$HOME/yyy", where yyy is a shell-escaped
    # homedir-relative path, or XDG_xxx_DIR="/yyy", where /yyy is an
    XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop"
    XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/Downloads"
    XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/Templates"
    XDG_PUBLICSHARE_DIR="$HOME/Public"
    XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR="$HOME/Documents"
    XDG_MUSIC_DIR="$HOME/Music"
    XDG_PICTURES_DIR="$HOME/Pictures"
    XDG_VIDEOS_DIR="$HOME/Videos"
    [john@localhost ~]$
    [john@localhost ~]$  ls -l ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs
    -rw-------. 1 john john 632 May 22 15:33 /home/john/.config/user-dirs.dirs
    [john@localhost ~]$
    [john@localhost ~]$ ls -al ~/Pictures
    ls: cannot access '/home/john/Pictures': No such file or directory
    [john@localhost ~]$
    Thanks.

    Did you have pictures in it? Can use Photorec to recover them. Then create new Pictures folder.

    Wild thought, but did you delete (trash) a photo and by mistake put the folder in trash?

    Re: Pictures folder is missing

    For some time I had selected the "Delete command to bypass Trash" in the File mgmt preferences. Unitil on day I inadvertedly had some folders "highlighted" by mistake, and got deleted along with the object in question. I don't do that anymore. Fortunately, I had backed up the files, so deleting them only raised my blood pressure a 'little bit'.

    I had photos in that folder, but not of any importance to me. But how do I recover the Pictures folder, which I think is default system folder? Thanks.

    Re: Pictures folder is missing

    The Pictures folder has a few properties related to XDG, but it is just another folder.

    One thing I have occasionally done is accidentally drag a file or folder to another folder.
    I would first have a quick look in your other folders that are in your Home to see if it happens to be there.
    For a more thorough check
    Code:
    $ find $HOME -type d -name Pictures
    If that doesn't turn it up re-create it with
    Code:
    $ mkdir -p  $HOME/Pictures

    User error. Please replace user and try again

    Tried it, but no luck.

    Yes, I can use this command to create a folder, but isn't the missing folder a system folder in the 1st place? I think it is, but please correct me if I am wrong. And If it is indeed a system folder, then I need to know how to restore it anyhow. Some other default system folder can also go missing someday, who knows. The help you have provided so far is really nice and I truly appreciate it.

    I had a similar issue in May 2017 with Fedora 25 Workstation (32 bit) and I did create a thread asking for a solution, which is given below as a link.

    https://forums.fedoraforum.org/showt...not-accessible

    And once you go through this old thread of mine, you will find that I did add/modify a line in the ".config/user-dirs.dirs" directory which was "XDG_PICTURES_DIR="$HOME/" and it was missing the word "Pictures" and then I added the word "Pictures" to it and it looked like "XDG_PICTURES_DIR="$HOME/Pictures", rebooted the system and the original default Pictures folder was back in place with all is contents. This time I applied the same solution but it did not work, can you please guide me further. Thanks a lot for your time and patience so far.

    You are making this more complicated than it is. There is nothing "special" about the Pictures directory in your $HOME directory (john). It is just an ordinary folder.
    Code:
    $ stat $HOME/Pictures
      File: /home/paul/Pictures
      Size: 4096 Blocks: 16 IO Block: 4096 directory

    Sorry, if that is the case.

    OK. Now, I have my doubts cleared. I always thought that Pictures, Videos, Documents, Music etc are default system folders and they should never be deleted. If they are just ordinary folders, then it is a good news for me. But then how come I got the same folder back by trying the solution as explained earlier ie by adding the word "Pictures" to a line in the ".config/user-dirs.dirs" file? Thanks

    Re: Pictures folder is missing

    This is how it looks like now..

    Code:
    [john@localhost ~]$ cat .config/user-dirs.dirs |grep -i xdg
    # This file is written by xdg-user-dirs-update
    # Format is XDG_xxx_DIR="$HOME/yyy", where yyy is a shell-escaped
    # homedir-relative path, or XDG_xxx_DIR="/yyy", where /yyy is an
    XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop"
    XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/Downloads"
    XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/Templates"
    XDG_PUBLICSHARE_DIR="$HOME/Public"
    XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR="$HOME/Documents"
    XDG_MUSIC_DIR="$HOME/Music"
    XDG_PICTURES_DIR="$HOME/"
    XDG_VIDEOS_DIR="$HOME/Videos"
    [john@localhost ~]$
    Now I have added the word "Pictures" to the line XDG_PICTURES_DIR="$HOME/" and reboot the system, but then again I do not see the Pictures folder in Home directory. Do I need to be root to do so? thanks.

    Code:
    [john@localhost ~]$ cat .config/user-dirs.dirs |grep -i xdg
    # This file is written by xdg-user-dirs-update
    # Format is XDG_xxx_DIR="$HOME/yyy", where yyy is a shell-escaped

    XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/Templates"

    XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR="$HOME/Documents"
