Exclamation Gnome shell crashing in Fedora 27 x86_64

    Hello everybody.

I just found a problem in Fedora 27 x86_64 with the latest kernel (4.15.17-300.fc27.x86_64). Gnome shell freezes the whole thing. I noticed the issue earlier today when I upgraded a new Fedora installation in a desktop machine with 8GB of RAM: the crashes occurred several minutes after login or immediately after starting firefox; in my ultrabook the system crashed immediately upon login.

Since both machines are entirely different (the desktop is AMD based, and the ultrabook is Intel based), the problem does not happen in Gnome "classic", and the desktop has twice as much RAM as the ultrabook, I suppose there is a memory problem with Gnome shell.

Can anybody confirm? Is there a known solution so far?

    Thanks,
    Joe.

No problems on any of my setups here.

My Tower is on 4.16.2 ( F28 Beta) so not representative of your issue
My Bookshelf sever is on 4.15.17, but has has no desktop so its not representative of your issue
** My Laptop is on 4.15.17 with no issues either on Wayland or X-Org
My Embedded BeagleBone Black is on 4.15.17, but has no desktop so its not representative of your issue

Are you running custom graphics binaries? remember they need to be kept in sync with kernel upgrades

Re: Gnome shell crashing in Fedora 27 x86_64

I have an older cpu and graphics card (2010). With F27, I can anticipate lockups at login time, and occasionally after a few hours. F27 gnome-shell has a memory leak problem that eats up ram for every program called. Fedora 28 has much less of this problem
Fedora 28 Gnome works much much better as it has for earlier releases of both Gnome and Fedora.

for my situation, when gnome-shell locks up, if ctl-alt-delete (one time) or alt-F2 R does not do it's thing, I log in via virtual terminal and issue the sudo killall -u myuserid
That kills my logon, and gnome-shell, and normally, the second time around, my session gets activated normally.

Re: Gnome shell crashing in Fedora 27 x86_64

In neither machine I am running custom graphics binaries, just plain "default-vanilla" ones.

I had experienced other problems with Gnome Shell, but not so bad, in fact it has been able to run fairly OK in most of my hardware (the oldest being a 2006 laptop). Hope they fix the issue soon.

    Thanks,
    Joe.

Re: Gnome shell crashing in Fedora 27 x86_64

Unfortunately the problem now happens in Gnome "classic", with the graphical system freezing even when I try to change desktop manager (little gear in login screen). Interestingly I can still SSH into the machine and shut it down (sort of, I still need to press the power button for a while), and the "text based" system is completely usable.

I hope the issue gets fixed with the next kernel update (can't wait).

    Thanks,
    Joe.

It's not memory related but will be a GPU driver issue. have you actually searched for and if necessary reported the problem officially via bugzilla? If not, you'll be hoping for a fix for a very long time if nobody else encounters and reports the same.

they'll need much more hardware information than you are supplying here. the best tools for that job are inxi and lspci

Re: Gnome shell crashing in Fedora 27 x86_64

For what it is worth, the Gnome shell problem is one that is what I posted above. F27 has Gnome version 3.26.
The Fedora 28 version of Gnome is 3.28, a much improved update.
I am not sure that 3.28 will be back-ported to Fedora 27. If all goes well, in a few days, Fedora 28 will be officially released. I would definitely upgrade when it is released. Like you, I am also experiencing Firefox problems with Gnome 3.26, but not with G 3.28.

Re: Gnome shell crashing in Fedora 27 x86_64

    Hello everyone.

I am gladly posting this from a fresh Fedora 28 x86-64 installation. At first the live USB froze, but then I thought of trying the "nomodeset" parameter for the Linux kernel at boot (press tab...). It magically solved the problem, and probably would have done the trick in Fedora 27 as well.

    Thanks,
    Joe.

Re: Gnome shell crashing in Fedora 27 x86_64

    Hello everyone.

The final solution I found for the issue mentioned in this thread was to install "xorg-x11-drv-amdgpu", and reboot without the "nomodeset" parameter (which actually made graphics somewhat slow). The system is working great so far.

    Thanks,
    Joe.
