    fedora 28 and firefox video(h264, youtube, gstreamer1)

Things have changed a bit lately with firefox, gstreamer1.14, ffmpeg, rpmfusion....
To get all firefox quantum video to run under fedora 28 you can't just add ffmpeg-libs - You also have to add compat-ffmpeg28 from rpmfusion....
    Code:
    dnf install https://download1.rpmfusion.org/{free/fedora/rpmfusion-free,nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree}-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm
    dnf install ffmpeg-libs compat-ffmpeg28
to check if everything(including h264) will work now in youtube: https://www.youtube.com/html5
note: I am not sure you even need ffmpeg-libs anymore?

why you are here in rpmfusion - don't forget to add your gstreamer1 video plugins for your fedora programs....
    Code:
    dnf install gstreamer1-libav gstreamer1-plugins-ugly
or you could just do everything at once listed above(need unrar?)....
    Code:
    dnf install https://download1.rpmfusion.org/{free/fedora/rpmfusion-free,nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree}-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm
    dnf install gstreamer1-libav gstreamer1-plugins-ugly unrar compat-ffmpeg28 ffmpeg-libs

The following is a partial installation list from my update script
    Code:
        install_individual 'gstreamer* gstreamer1-plugins-base gstreamer1-libav'
        install_individual 'gstreamer1-plugins-good gstreamer1-plugins-ugly '
        install_individual 'gstreamer1-plugins-bad-free'
        install_individual 'gstreamer1-plugins-bad-freeworld'
        install_individual 'gstreamer1-plugins-bad-free-extras '
        install_individual 'gnucash hdparm* gvim hddtemp'

Thanks pal, thank you very much.
    I installed the codecs running
    Code:
    sudo dnf groupupdate multimedia
but some codecs were still missing, because twitter video and spotify-web problems. All fixed after run
    Code:
    sudo dnf install compat-ffmpeg28

Thank for the very useful info.
I only installed ffmpeg-libs which came with 22 extra (dependent) packages. ffmpeg-libs comes with repo RPM Fusion for Fedora 28 - Free. That was for me enough to get H.264 and MSE & H.264 enabled.
    Below installed along with ffmpeg-libs.
    Code:
      ffmpeg-libs.x86_64 4.0.1-1.fc28

Re: fedora 28 and firefox video(h264, youtube, gstreamer1)

I tried to install ffmpeg-libs from Fusion. It refused citing missing dependencies. I then went back to the instructions given by gman, and now Firefox video works fine on everything i have tried so far. Using Fedora 28 mate, just updated, on Asus x44h laptop.

Interestingly Firefox had no video issues under the latest Cinnamon spin i used as a secondary distro. When i decided to make Fedora my goto i installed my fave mate desktop. Only then did i have Firefox video issues. Odd, but apparently solved.

I have not used Fedora extensively so I'm still learning. Perhaps i did the wrong dl originally. YMMV.

Hi people, hi up to date is this guide? Do is someone in charge of update it regualry? dont get me worg, I ask in a kind way because i just did a fresh fedora 28 install, and after the usual dnf update i can see my favorites videos in chrome and firefox, even my ogrish and porn videos (xvideos.com)
I dont use musics applications so im not sure if they still need the codecs install, anyway i just enable the repos in gnome software app, added rpmfussion using one click web link and i did not have no install anythin else to view h264 videos in the browser, this was not the default jus some 1 o 2 months ago, i had to install the libraries and modules recommended in this guide

Re: fedora 28 and firefox video(h264, youtube, gstreamer1)

I just did a fresh xfce fedora 28 install the other day.... I still had to do this:
    dnf install https://download1.rpmfusion.org/{free/fedora/rpmfusion-free,nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree}-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm
    dnf install gstreamer1-libav gstreamer1-plugins-ugly unrar compat-ffmpeg28 ffmpeg-libs
"gstreamer1-libav gstreamer1-plugins-ugly" - is so fedora programs that use 'gstreamer1' can play mpeg4, etc...

"compat-ffmpeg28" - is so firefox can play h264(without the h264 plugin that comes with firefox).... youtube, and probably xvideos don't use h264 much anymore - so most videos play fine without it....

"ffmpeg-libs" - I don't need installed at all - maybe it is needed for gnome desktop(or other than xfce desktop)????

As time goes by rpmfusion codecs are needed less(which is a good thing).... As patents keep ending - they include more codecs in fedora by default, and less in rpmfusion.... That is why I made the original post a couple of months ago - because things have changed.... to quote my first post in here "Things have changed a bit lately with firefox, gstreamer1.14, ffmpeg, rpmfusion"
