Evolution Contacts categories selection is broken

I just finished an installation of Fedora 27 onto a refurbished laptop. I set up evolution for several of my email accounts without much of a problem. I imported my contact list, again with no problem. However, when viewing the contact list, I can select the pull down list of categories -- search proceeds as expected retrieving all the appropriate contacts -- but now the categories button is dead. I try to select it but nothing happens. The overall app is running properly, I can check mail, look at my calendar. But returning to Contacts. the showatagories button is still dead. I can only see my full contact list again by manually replacing the
~/.config/evolution/addressbook/state.ini line #3 with "SearchFilter=contact-filter-any-category" and restarting evolution.

    Any suggestions?

    Running Evolution 3.26.5 (3.26.5-1.fc27)

Just a wild guess, but it might be trying to search some on-line contact list(s).

Does it exhibit the same behaviour if you run it in off-line mode ?

    ocratato,
Good idea, however, it still locked up. I checked through all the Contact preferences and didn't see anything out of the ordinary or anything that implied that an on-line data base was considered outside of the mail servers. Evolution services several accounts one being a gmail account, but gmail was not set up not to include any contact info.
