How to handle my SSD space ?

    Hello, me again ^^

I have a 256gb SSD for the system to boot up and a 2tb /home drive.
i want to use space on my SSD to build sources because its faster and on my HDD its huge stress for the mechanic.
So i made a symlink from /usr/local/src into my /home/src what was ok, as long as it was only Wine to build there ...

Now i run short in diskspace because the Fedora installer made this when i installed couple years ago:

    Code:
    [rawfox@operator ~]$ df -h
Dateisystem Größe Benutzt Verf. Verw% Eingehängt auf
    devtmpfs 3,9G 0 3,9G 0% /dev
    tmpfs 4,0G 44M 3,9G 2% /dev/shm
    tmpfs 4,0G 1,5M 4,0G 1% /run
    tmpfs 4,0G 0 4,0G 0% /sys/fs/cgroup
    /dev/mapper/fedora00-root 50G 33G 15G 70% /
    tmpfs 4,0G 36K 4,0G 1% /tmp
    /dev/sdc1 1,8T 655G 1,1T 38% /home
    /dev/sdb1 477M 182M 266M 41% /boot
    tmpfs 803M 20K 803M 1% /run/user/1000
    [rawfox@operator ~]$

So, what is the intended way to handle the fedora disc mapper ?!
How should i join all those unused tempfs into my rootspace ?!
Or can i join them together into a new patition ?!

All those read/writes will kill a SSD quicker than the mechanical drive, plus the compile speed difference isn't that great.

You can't use tmpfs space for root as tmpfs refers to RAM file system.

If you have enough RAM you can use /tmp (tmpfs) for compiling code, it's faster than SSD (even compiling code in RAM isn't that much quicker than mechanical drive).

okay, ill read more into that ^^

okay, but where is the other ~200gb SSD space gone then ?!

Well, the basic idea was, to take weight from the HDD mechanic and get a quicker build, but if thats void, well then.
The idea to compile stuff in ram is great, ill test that out but i have only 8gb, time to upgrade my pc anyways this year

oh and thanks for your reply, that was helpful ^^

Re: How to handle my SSD space ?

First up, I am not using Fedora, so you should get some advice specific to your version.

I would offer a counter to Leigh's advice. I have been using an SSD for some fairly intensive development for about three years and it has only used 2% of its life. I expect to upgrade the machine long before the drive runs out of lifetime. Obviously it will depend on the actual usage scenario.

The other 200GB is probably not allocated. You can use the LVM tools to either extend the root (/) or perhaps a better approach would be to create another volume. As I said, I am not using Fedora, so the exact tools and commands to use is best left to someone with experience.

Check man lvm for more details on LVM.
