dnf very slow when system is installed on USB key

    Hi,
I've installed Fedora on a USB key, not a live edition; it works with a decent speed but dnf upgrade is very slow.

dnf is fast as expected downloading RPM files but it's very slow during RPM installation.
Monitoring with top I've noted a load about 4.0 to 4.5, but CPU is always under 4%.

    Any idea about this slowness?

    Thanks in advance

Perhaps USB stick write speed is slow. It might be fine on continuous file, but may cough on large amount of smaller files.

USB sticks vary. Some are simply not good to run an OS on. I'm using Fedora 27 on a Sandisk USB right now and it works great. I avoid the tiny USB sticks as they get too hot, burned one up not long ago.

sandisk ultra fit usb 3.0 64GB works great for running an OS from and heat dissipates reasonably well. the read and write speeds are good, it does get warm but not too hot in operation.

This usually happens when Delta RPM is running, which has to basically go file by file and check what needs changed/patched/updated/modified , so it has to read and write and verify.
There is a new M.2 NVMe over USB (StarTech.com M.2 to SATA SSD Enclosure - USB 3.0 with UASP)
That may give you the speed you need. But look at its picture you will see that it needs some air flow.

That is what I burned up I like the bigger Sandisk usb sticks as they don't get warm and hold up pretty well.
