Unhappy USB keyboard and mouse cease working on screen lock

    Hi everyone

I'm looking for help with a frustrating problem on my desktop PC running Fedora 27. In short, when the screen goes into power saving mode (either automatically or manually) my mouse and keyboard stop responding. No amount of key hitting or mouse clicking will turn the screen back on. The only option is to hit the PC's reset button.

When the screen goes blank the PC remains powered on (i.e. it has not suspended nor hibernated), as do the keyboard and mouse since their LEDs remain lit. The problem hasn't shown itself on the same hardware when I have previously run Fedora 26 and SUSE Leap 42.3. My Thinkpad X220 also running Fedora 27 does not see the problem. So this seems to be a problem peculiar to my desktop hardware and F27.

I've tried a few kernel boot options I found through forum searches but none have helpd. I'd like to try to diagnose this via the system logs but am unsure where to start. As such if anyone has any suggestions I'd be most grateful.

Some details about my system are as follows:

    sudo lsusb -v

Re: USB keyboard and mouse cease working on screen lock

question , can you try to ssh into the box from another PC, when it is in lock mode, and see if you can kill the screenlock ? and then if so, what happens ?

I use USB keyboards, bluetooth keyboards, usb mice, usb trackball, and bluetooth mice, and I have never seen what you are seeing.

Re: USB keyboard and mouse cease working on screen lock

Hi - firstly my apologies for double-posting this question in the forum.

Secondly, thanks bobx001 for the suggestion. This got me thinking about my set-up and the main non-standard pacakage I'm running which is the eglstream enabled mutter package to improve performance of Wayland under an NVIDIA graphics card. Below are the steps I had performed to enable this package prior to noticing this problem:

    https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/NVIDIA#Wayland
Gnome with Wayland and NVIDIA doesn't work by default at this point. There is a need to have a special version of mutter built with eglstream support.

    sudo dnf copr enable mati865/mutter-eglstream
sudo dnf --disablerepo="*" --enablerepo="mati865-mutter-eglstream" reinstall mutter
Before making any further changes to this package I have tested my problem in the desktop using both xorg and Wayland. As it turns out only the Wayland desktop is affected. So, I have now backed-out the mutter package (using sudo dnf --disablerepo="mati865-mutter-eglstream" --enablerepo="*" reinstall mutter) and rebooted. This appears to have now solved the problem in that I can lock and unlock my screen in both xorg and Wayland desktops.

So I would say the root cause is found, but this leaves me with un unresponsive Wayland desktop. I'll use xorg for now and will see if I can raise a bug against the eglstream mutter package.
