    F27: frequent wayland lockups

After upgrading from F26 to F27 I have experienced lots of crashes where wayland session locks up and no button does anything, no magic keys or acpi powerbutton or anything helps. Reset button is needed to get the box up again.

Usually this happens when firefox is open, a video plays in totem (or VLC) and I move a window or adjust the size of a window. Even mouse stops moving.

GPU is Nvidia GTX 1050 with default Nouveau driver. The journalctl -k -b -1 outputs the last kernel log from the crash, last rows of it are:

    Code:
    joulu 18 18:04:40 htpc-fritz-box kernel: nouveau 0000:01:00.0: gr: TRAP ch 14 [007deee000 Xwayland[1788]]

Any ideas what I should do? I may have to re-install F26 due to other upgrade issues as well, F27 just seems too unstable for my use.
    [edit: fixed a typo]

    Re: F27: frequent wayland lockups

Just to add that I have the same issue after upgrading from F26 to F27. On F26 I had to use X.org as Wayland would give me a "grey screen of death" on login.
On F27 that problem went away, but now I get lockups especially when resizing windows. I have a Geforce 960 and am using nouveau:

    # lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM206 [GeForce GTX 960] (rev a1)

    After a crash:

    Re: F27: frequent wayland lockups

I found, (in the late double oughts) that this frequently happened with Nouveau. (F16-18? I don't remember). I hear different things about nouveau--that it's gotten much better or that it's still very bad. But the freezing lock up stuff was always fixed for me by giving up on nouveau and using NVidia. Unless you have strong philosophical reasons not to, I'd recommend trying that first.

(As far as I know, that's still the most popular way to do it. Currently, I have an Nvidia on CentOS, but I use elrepo, which is for CentOS/RH as opposed to Fedora).

Are you using Gnome and if so, with some extensions? Disable the extensions for a day or so. If Gnome is OK, restore the extensions, one by one over a few days to determine which of them causes gnome-shell to crash. I believe strongly, from personal experience, that gnome-shell is crashing for you.

    Re: F27: frequent wayland lockups

I have always used the default Fedora setup, which recently has been gnome on wayland. I have not enabled any additional extensions. I was traveling for a while, got home today and bang yet another crash after 15 minutes of use. This time I had rhythmbox playing a radio which continued to play even the UI stopped responding. Thus the kernel and other processes stayed alive. So your idea that it's gnome-shell that crashes might be possible. Should this be visible in some log like the kernel log? I wonder why the traditional Magic SysRq key does not work? Also why the ACPI powerbutton does nothing?

Now I logged in with Gnome over Xorg just to have some experience on that. I could install Nvidia drivers but I have used Nouveau basically for a couple of reasons, no extra hassles on installing drivers and avoiding any related issues on upgrades. Also I don't want to taint the kernel with external modules. I do not game so I don't really need the performance.

Tried to look for any extensions I might have enabled and forgot. Only one is the English - US Typing Booster. I had enabled that on F26 and later forgotten. Now I tried to open the settings menu for that and suddenly libgnomekbd crashed, I got it in crash reporter. I deleted that input method and left only the default Finnish language.

Your display of lines containing nouveau seem to indicate a video display problem. I have AMD and I have no issues ever with my 8 year old graphics card.

    Re: F27: frequent wayland lockups

It certainly looks like this is related to Nvidia GPU and the graphics stack, whether it is caused by nouveau or something that wayland does on top of that. Still, with F26 I had none of these issues and they started the day I upgraded to F27. So something changed there, the hardware has not changed. On the other hand I have now used the Gnome over Xorg for some days and have not had a single crash. It very much feels like the wayland has changed somehow, perhaps triggering a problem in nouveau. At least for now I will continue using Gnome over Xorg.
