    Fedora 27 hangs on logout, reboot or poweroff with GDM from Plasma.

    Hi all,

    I've have installed Fedora 27 Workstation updated from 26. From a time to now when I logout, reboot or poweroff from any DE different from GNOME the system hangs with black (soft backlight) screen and it turns irresponsive. The only solution is turn if off from power button. It occurs in KDE Plasma, Cinnamon and XFCE at least but from GNOME it works fine. I've tried reinstalling from zero maintaining my home folder but the problem comes again. I suspect that nouveau is causing any problem but I don't know how test it.

    My system has an Optimus graphics system:

    00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)
    01:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM107M [GeForce GTX 860M] (rev a2)

    Thanks. Regards.

    Try using another DM as GDM eats babies and X sessions.

    I also tried only with SDDM and the same issue ... I've always worked with GDM and I've never had problems until about 2 months.

    Have you tried disabling wayland in /etc/gdm/custom.conf as will prevent switching

    from

    gdm(wayland) > whatever X session(Xorg) > gdm(wayland)

    to

    gdm(Xorg) > whatever X session(Xorg) > gdm(Xorg)

    I try with SDDM now and I cannot enter any DE. Machine hangs when I try to login. I've returned to GDM.

    Have you tried lightdm-gtk or slick-greeter (lightdm) as they are virtually bullet proof

    install lightdm-gtk or slick-greeter
    Code:
    sudo dnf install slick-greeter
    Code:
    sudo systemctl disable gdm
    sudo systemctl disable sddm
    sudo systemctl enable lightdm
    reboot

    I've tried with WaylandEnable both true or false and it's worse: sessions takes too long to login and logout freezes the machine too. I'm trying to debug with nouveau 'cos I suspect it has the blame ...

    I've googled a bit and it seems that nouveau driver is buggy but I don't know how it resolve it ...

    Re: Fedora 27 hangs on logout, reboot or poweroff with GDM from Plasma.

    Well, I've resolved partially the issue. In summary I uninstalled nouveau that is buggy in the two last releases of Fedora 26/27 and installed nvidia.

    dnf remove xorg-x11-drv-nouveau
    dnf install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia
    In Fedora 27 the above commands insert the appropiate kernel parameters in grub config file:

    cat /etc/sysconfig/grub
    GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
    GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="$(sed 's, release .*$,,g' /etc/system-release)"
    GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
    GRUB_DISABLE_SUBMENU=true
    GRUB_TERMINAL_OUTPUT="console"
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau modprobe.blacklist=nouveau nvidia-drm.modeset=1 rhgb quiet"
    GRUB_DISABLE_RECOVERY="true"
    Nothing else is necessary. Now everything works fine, all sessions can logout, poweroff and reboot fine.

    But there are some problems:

    - Plasma session takes tooooo long to start.
    - Wayland is not running. Enable the WaylandEnable=true in /etc/gdm/custom.conf doesn't work. I don't know if Wayland is supported with Nvidia proprietary drivers.
    - Plasma fonts looks smaller than before.

    Also an old problem with tearing seems to work fine now.

    You need eglstreams enabled mutter (fedora mutter doesn't enable it) for gdm to work as it falsely tries to use nvidia wayland (nvidia uses eglstreams for wayland) when nvidia-drm.modeset=1 is set.

    Thank you very much for your support and help. Anyway I prefer wait to Fedora release mutter with eglstreams enabled because I don't like to depend on third party repositories by now. Is there any plans when will Fedora release a eglstreams enabled mutter package or Nvidia Wayland support?

    Thanks.

    It looks like it wont happen till xorg server 1.20 as they are waiting eglstreams Xwayland support

    Nvidia Wayland support?
    Do you mean the next generation of support?

    I mean the first point only.

    Thank you very much for your help.

    I'll try to label this thread as solved.
