Carrizo, black screen on HP laptop

    [rant on]

i originally installed F24, while having X pinned to 1.17 ( circa F22). That sort of worked - but with constant (daily) sudden screen resolution changes and half of the keyboard not producing right symbols - i have enough.

I upgraded to 27 , with the hopes that the "latest and greatest" will save the day. Unfortunately, i'm still admiring the consistency and the beauty of the black screen.
    [/rant off]

Any help will be highly appreciated.

i added a mesa-vulkan rpm and now it doesn't look like X starts at all - the /var/log/X.org.log has an older timestamp...

Re: Carrizo, black scrren on HP laptop

mesa-vulkan is just openGL rendering right?

try booting without rhgb and see what messages you see right before it crashes

that amdgpu boot line was added by you? it seems amdgpu / xorg has an issue, maybe try booting without that argument next

edit: it seems you have a volcanic island chip, but that arg is for sea island. i think you shouldn't use it

Yes , i think its volcanic islands type, and thats why i added mesa-volcanic.

I took out nomofetting and rhgb. No acpi_ and no amdgpu params - black screen.
Added amdgpu.cik_support - saw a high resolution boot messages with beautiful black screen after that.

I switched to init 3(or whatever it is called in systemd world), and yet i dont get to see terminals.
Maybe the problem is not with x afterall?
Thank you for trying to help

Re: Carrizo, black scrren on HP laptop

I see the systemd message: Dec 2 11:38:48 hp systemd[1]: Started Load/Save Screen Backlight Brightness of backlight:amdgpu_bl0.

try using the keyboard backlight controls or checking/setting the value of cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness and /sys/class/backlight/amdgpu_bl0/brightness

when your system fails to boot, can you press control + alt + [F1,F2,F3,F4] to get a terminal prompt?

I see in your Xorg.0.log it fails after initializing to DRI2, try adding your 20-amdgpu.conf back to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

    Code:
    Section "Device"
    	Identifier "Carrizo"
    	Driver "amdgpu"
    	Option "Accel" "on"
    	Option "DRI" "3"
    	Option "TearFree" "on"
    EndSection

can't switch (or rather unable to see if it switches) the terminals.
writing into /sys/class/backlight/amdgpu_bl0/brightness works - i can see the brightness of black screen changes. but the acpi_video0 is not there.
    Code:
     ls -l /sys/class/backlight/
    total 0
    lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 0 Dec  6 12:11 amdgpu_bl0 -> ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/drm/card0/card0-eDP-1/amdgpu_bl0

the only way i can see the terminal is if i boot with "nomodeset" in kernel params.
I'm pretty sure that the problem is before the boot gets to the X load .
it is interesting to nnotice that grub screen is in high resolution and when it starts to boot - messages are flying in high resolution until something is loaded and black screen kills all the fun.

Re: Carrizo, black scrren on HP laptop

with acpi.backlight=vendor (or no argument at all) you should only have amdgpu_bl0. with acpi.backlight=acpi or video you will also have acpi_video0 backlight control

are you still getting glamor and dri2 errors in Xorg.0.log?

if you boot with nomodeset you're going to be using software rendering when Xorg starts. I think this means amdgpu module has issues

try this to fix glamor / dri2:
    Code:
    dnf remove mesa-vulkan-drivers
    dnf install xorg-x11-server-Xorg xorg-x11-drv-amdgpu mesa-dri-drivers llvm-libs
paste new Xorg log if it still fails

Im not loading into X anymore. I can't even get the terminals in the high res.

It appears there is a issue with this particular GPU and amdgpu- there are at least 10 open bugs in fedora X, opendesktop.
I reinstalled the rpms you suggested - no change.

I blacklisted the amdgpu ( /etc/modprobe) and enabled radeon ( xorg..-ati), i also added fbdev driver. This combination actually realible boots into init 3 and i see terminals. running X ( startx under root) makes screen blink with some bluish color but then x exits , stating radeon is not happy with the card -

    Logs:
    X - https://paste.fedoraproject.org/past...dopvLPQ6dzpoWQ
    boot - https://paste.fedoraproject.org/past...AzKS8WqHdtMMZA

Switching modules around - blacklisting radeon and "whitelisting" amdgpu - and i'm back to the black screen without terminals.

In both cases GPU was running with amdgpu kernel module.

ah, that's too bad. you could try to use the proprietary amd drivers if you want an alternate to amdgpu.

I don't think loading radeon module will know to load the firmware for your card

it may be related to the way HP has bundled the graphics card multiplexer in their WMI kernel module, if you see a trend of other people having your issue but only with HP's you could try to disable the hp-wmi kernel module

    good luck!

Well, this laptop did run with f22(xorg 1.17) and fglrx drivers. What was annoying is that it occasionally (once every few hours, would zoom into desktop , shift wont work).
I also have quite a few acpi errors when it boots- maybe thats somehow related?

Thank you pointing to wmi module.
    How do i disable it?

Re: Carrizo, black scrren on HP laptop

the hp-wmi driver provides functionality specific to the way HP wrote their UEFI/BIOS, so keyboard controls / backlight controls etc

I think this may be causing an issue with amdgpu, otherwise you should have hp-wmi enabled to provide this functionality

you can blacklist with /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf or at runtime with
    Code:
    modprobe.blacklist=hp-wmi

    One step forward.

Got kernel 4.15 to work. And with no special parameters i see terminals on init 3 . ( yeah, almost excited )

now. I'm looking to get X to work.
So far it crashes on "glamor":

Re: Carrizo, black scrren on HP laptop

    If i add this config:
    Code:
    Section "Device"
            Identifier "Carrizo"
            Driver "amdgpu"
            Option "AccelMethod" "none"
    # Option "Accel" "on"
    # Option "DRI" "3"
            Option "TearFree" "on"
    EndSection
X still fails to launch, but doesn't have "EE" ... Why it won't launch i don't know

    X log - https://paste.fedoraproject.org/past...LQ42aBPX9Q0xzQ

As soon as i enable "Accel" or "Accelmethod" i'm back to the errors with glamor ...
