Toner cartridges and dust in them

    Hi Friends,

I have never used a laser printer with a toner cartridge myself, but yesterday I just came across these YouTube videos in which a guys seems to be taking apart the toner cartridge of Canon LBP 2900 printer. I am wondering whether during a refill, one is always supposed to come across some amount of dust inside toner cartridges no matter how new they are. Is it true? This dust is nothing but the toner residue itself, correct? And toner itself is nothing but powder, right?

    Thanks a lot.

Re: Toner cartridges and dust in them

I found that the difference in cost between a genuine cartridge and a refill was less than 15 percent or $10.00. My brand is Brothers. I stick to the originals. For other manufacturers, that spread may be up to 50%.

When I visited the refill-er he would not add to the residual toner that was left. It was, according to him, contaminated with paper dust.

Thus, I used the refiller once, out came the old toner, came, and new toner provided. I felt guilty to have gone that route, and when Costco had my brand of toner in stock, I bought my refills from there.

I too only use genuine consumables (XL capacity inkjet cartridges) but can find them heavily discounted through dealers specialising in liquidation stock as my hp printer is over a decade old now. you just have to be weary of dates. normally they will tell you if you ask before buying, especially if it isn't in original packaging.

it needs a new lower tray as the gears have worn out so the feed arm doesn't always lower with sufficient force to feed paper. I may just remove the tray though as it's a removable add-on that came with the printer and I don't use three different paper types in the printer any longer. other than that the printer is still working fine.

It might be bad to breath in, the particle size of the dust is small and gets in the lungs.

There is always residual toner left behind when the printer says "replace". When I accumulated three toner cartridges I emptied two of them into the third and got another 25 percent of printing. I did not notice any difference in the before/after printing. Maybe this paper dust thing is an exaggeration.

Its hard to tell if the stuff along with toner, inside the toner cartridge, is paper dust, or dandruff. They say "Both are invisible to the eye".
