QT Programs on GTK DE (Bloat?)

    Hello,

I apologize if this has been asked already, I wasn't able to find anything in my brief search. I've used Linux off and on over the past 10 years or so, and just switched back to Fedora 26 from a short stint with Ubuntu Gnome (I always seem to end up back on Fedora). One thing I've always wondered is, if I run a GTK based DE and install Qt programs, does it bring along a bunch of bloat or unnecessary packages (or Qt based with GTK applications). Would I be better off sticking to GTK programs on Gnome, or at this point does it not really matter?

On another note, hope to participate on the forums and the community!

I use the Mate DE, which is a fork of gnome 2. Here's the list of installed qt packages and their sizes that have been pulled in by the various qt apps I use. As you can see, it's not that many, and not much over 100MB.
    Code:
    $ sort-installed-by-size | grep qt
    qtwebkit 36M
    qt-x11 34M
    python3-qt5 22M
    qt 18M
    qt5-qtbase-gui 16M
    qt5-qtdeclarative 10M
    qt5-qtbase 8.3M

Re: QT Programs on GTK DE (Bloat?)

As someone who runs a Gnome desktop and builds Qt applications I think that there shouldn't be too much unnecessary stuff brought along. Qt has a well defined set of libraries, so a well constructed application should only use what it needs.

I cannot make the same guarantee for Gnome apps on KDE. I have seen a simple Gnome app try to link to almost all the Gnome libraries.

The QT libraries may take up 10gigs at maximum. If your desktop or laptop is short of diskspace then QT will appear as bloat, If your with a 1 terrabyte drive, you should be ok. I have both gtk and qt stuff, and my 20gigs of / are adequate.

Not all libraries on disk are in ram or loaded when you start Linux. You should not notice any increase in static ram use.

I am interested to know what is taking so much space on your Qt installation.
I have a Qt5 installation that includes examples, docs, tools and the whole shebang duplicated for arm, and it comes to just over 1 GB.
My Qt4 libraries (in /usr/lib64) come to about 100MB.

    Hi ocratato.
I have 10 years of QT collections from xp days to now All together, under 10gigs, but I sometimes take down qt stuff with which to evaluate, and then clean it up or archive it. I still have a working xp system in my cupboard.
