External IP keep changing. How do I keep it?

My external IP keep changing all the time and it can get frustrating because sometimes I will be able to SSH to my home PC but then, suddenly, not anymore because my external IP changed. How do I stop my external IP from changing? Do I have to call my ISP? Or is there anyway to keep it?

It will cost you extra to get a 'static IP' from your ISP. You may want to investigate a dynamic DNS solution. We use DYNDNS.com but I am sure there are others. Ours costs as well, but works great.
    Change - the only constant.

I've used no-ip in the past, until they've changed to make user renew free domain every month. I am using Dynu now. I like the short suffix and the options it provides.

You will also also need a client that reports IP address to Dynamic DNS service from time to time. Some routers supports the most used services out of the box, for Dynu I had to install `ddclient` on the server to do that.

Also, I think switching to IPv6 would provide a free static IPv6 address if your Internet service provider supports it. Ask your service provider for more details.

I called my ISP and they should give me a static IP in a few days.

Was it cheap? My ISP charges an arm and a leg to have a static IP. I envy you.

You could Google "Dynamic Domain Name Service" to find service providers and plans to your liking. Some services are "Free" and others require a fee. The service itself provides an internet domain name for your IP address that will track changes as they occur.
