intel graphics HD4000 / potential replacement?

    Hi,

I have older desktop here, which is totally sufficient for my work now and probably years to come. However I finally upgraded from fedora 22 to fedora 26, and I have GPU problems again.

With 22, there was something called intel graphics installer, which, after you solve myriad of problems, was able to install drivers with which his intel HD4000 work almost perfect.

With 26 this installer is no more. Fast movement in movies produces glitches, blender seems to be considerably slower.

Question A: does anyone know, how to put HD4000 back into play?

    or

Question B: fiddling with HD4000 cost money; I can buy some other cheap graphics card instead. Is there GPU, which is known to be working with linux and being actually supported by producing company? I don't need anything fancy. Just normal movies; I don't even run that blender that often.

    thanks,
    Martin.

Look here. If you google a bit, you can find out how to set it up as a repo. But, if you look, the packages are older than those currently in Fedora 25.

    From Intel: mesa-dri-drivers 17.0.2
Installed from Fedora Updates: mesa-dri-drivers.x86_64 17.0.5-3.fc25

Re: intel graphics HD4000 / potential replacement?

aha! I remembered the pain I went through with fedora 22, so I was specifically looking for "Intel® Graphics Installer for Linux", and it was renamed to update-tool :| THANKS.

But once we're at it — running it fails with:

Package manager operation failed: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.freedesktop.PackageKit: Timeout was reached

googling it returns some mentions about gnome software center. I'm running xfce, so not gnome services are running. Might that be related? If so, is there a way how to run them just once without contaminating env with (otherwise) totally unneeded stuff?

Sorry, I've never used the intel updater. The package versions in the fedora repos appear to be newer, so I don't see any point in it.

ok, might be. Then we can proceed to question B: if HD4000 does not work(now, again), what sort of graphics card would you recommend me to buy, so that it actually work? (at least no glitches during movie playback)

I'll have to defer to others, I have no experience with nvidia or amd.

ok, thanks for your time and help!
Lets wait if someone can recommend some non-integrated gpu.

Re: intel graphics HD4000 / potential replacement?

    just info for others:
I just verify it, and in fedora22 I can play certain video tear-free. This was great uphill battle, but somehow using nvidia installer we made it.

The same video, played from same drive, with same command tears heavily under fedora26. I'm looking for any solution including buying new hardware(guaranteed to work with fedora26).

What DE do you use? I see video tearing in Mate and XFCE. I can fix the tearing in XFCE by disabling compositing. Using Gnome 3 with Wayland gives the best video performance.

Re: intel graphics HD4000 / potential replacement?

it's XFCE, *but* in fedora 22 with xfce there's (almost) no tearing. Installing nvidia drivers (which fails now) fixed it in past. Disabling composition or trying different compositors like compton did not help at all in past, and does not have any effect now.

It's possible, that in gnome/kde/whatever video works, but XFCE just suits my overall needs best, and I cant opt for lower work performance & happiness in general just because of tearing video... With that logic I could go directly to windows(!).

I love my mid-hid end RX 480, but take a look at https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pa...ce-gt710&num=1

Both my video cards are these:

    root@clinton:~# lspci -v|grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF119 [NVS 310] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

I like that they have dual DigitalPort outputs. Drivers are installed from RPMFustion following their CLI instructions for akmod. Works great, no problems when updating the kernel, no video tearing in XFCE with disabled compositor.

Sorry for late reply, thanks you all for all responses and help.

GeForce gt710 sounds like nice and cheap solution I most probably try.

    thanks a lot.
