Question Intel GPU - HDMI output Monitor Flickering Screen Issues

There do appear to be a number of posts on this but I cannot find one that helps me address it.

I have an HP EliteBook 8470p (SN CNU3039BJW). I have searched the HP website to confirm the graphics card by the serial number is not found. The laptop is connected to a Philips 273V.

    I have installed:
    Linux lt-basel-a.baselmania.com 4.12.9-300.fc26.x86_64 #1 SMP Fri Aug 25 13:09:43 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux (Fedora 26)

According to the OS: Intel® Ivybridge Mobile
    lshw -c video gives

    *-display
    description: VGA compatible controller
product: 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller
    vendor: Intel Corporation
    physical id: 2
    bus info: pci@0000:00:02.0
    version: 09
    width: 64 bits
    clock: 33MHz
    capabilities: msi pm vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom
    configuration: driver=i915 latency=0
    resources: irq:31 memory:d4000000-d43fffff memory:c0000000-cfffffff ioport:4000(size=64) memory:c0000-dffff
The external philips screen flashes off and one randomly. Further when on the recommended resolution the text is not clear with everything on that screen vibrating. If I drop resolution the text is clear and the vibration stops but the blanking out continues.

What I do find strange is that when I completed my fresh install yesterday it appeared to be working fine but now after doing a 2nd re-install it is now.

    Re: Filckering Screen Issues

When I plug in via VGA there is not flickering but I can not go above 1024x768

On HDMI it flickers and flashes no matter what the resolution

Re: Intel GPU - HDMI output Monitor Flickering Screen Issues

if you want to search the hp website for any information use the model number on the sticker underneath that has the code after the # symbol. the serial number doesn't generally work on their site.

I noticed that some of the notebooks in that range have AMD switchable discrete graphics. try entering the UEFI/BIOS options when you turn on the notebook and disabling the switchable graphics if possible. then connect the monitor over HDMI and see what happens. this is of course only a troubleshooting step and should be reversed if it makes no difference and you dualboot another operating system that makes use of the discrete AMD graphics.

    Code:
    lspci
will tell you exactly what graphics hardware is present in the notebook

I got it working perfectly with VGA but I needed to disable Wayland in /etc/gdm/custom.conf and I could then create my own customized resolution.

I am now thinking that my HDMI cable might be faulty. I will test and update once I know.

Re: Intel GPU - HDMI output Monitor Flickering Screen Issues

indeed your notebook doesn't have the AMD chip, thats why I asked about posting the lspci output so you can find out what graphics hardware you do have.

It's an Intel HD 4000 GPU integrated into your 3rd generation core processor's die. I have the same adaptor in my own notebook. I've never had screen flickering over HDMI with either Linux or Windows when connected to a 1080p TV. I don't have a monitor with HDMI input.

Testing the cable is a good idea but also if you have a can of compressed air, give the HDMI port a quick blast.
