    Can't reach ftp-server: "Connection refused"

    I recently tried to connect to an ftp server, but no matter which method I am using, I always get a "Connection Refused" error. I am not sure whether this is an error with my computer or with my server.

    Any idea how I could find out, and if it's Fedora, what I could do about it?

    Howdy,

    For FTP, you need three open ports, one for FTP control, one for RPC and the data may be transferred over a random high port.

    First of all, check whether you have a routing problem with the telnet utility:
    $ telnet ftpserveripaddress 20

    and look at the error messages to get some clues.

    It says:

    "telnet: connect to address 217.160.0.132: Connection refused"

    Re: Can't reach ftp-server: "Connection refused"

    You should at least get the server welcome banner, followed by connection refused, since telnet cannot actually speak 'FTP'.

    So you either have a network routing problem, or the FTP server isn't running at all.

    Some more test ideas:

    Restart the FTP server and watch the error log.

    Check the firewall rules.

    I had a problem similar on my vps which was an openvz container. Everytime I set up my ssh config on a new operating system, I would update it, the update of network manager would screw up my connections. Did you have this problem before or did it just pop up? is SElinux enabled? I ended up blacklisting NetworkManager

    The first thing to test is the server itself. Log on with SSH and run 'ftp localhost' and see what happens.
