Dual boot Fedora 26 with Windows 10.

I have a problem dual booting Windows 10 with Fedora 26. First the background, I did a clean/fresh install of Windows 10 in uefi/secure boot mode. All updates applied, and fast boot off. Shrunk c:\ and have 260 GB free space. Installed Fedora 26 no problems. So know I am all set except for booting. When booting system goes straight to Windows 10. The reason for the background info is that when I googled around most replies entailed installing linux then windows, or dual booting with one os in uefi and the other in legacy/bios. This is not the case for me. If someone can help me it would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Dual boot Fedora 26 with Windows 10.

I have a couple windows 10/fedora 25 dual-boot computers, both in uefi/secure boot. Here's the procedure I followed, installing fedora from a live usb fedora 25 xfce.

    * Free up space on target disk. Leave free space unallocated
    * Boot the live usb in uefi mode. When booted, choose "install to hard disk"
    * Tell the installer to use the unallocated space. Customize fedora partitions if desired (I make changes to the default partitioning layout).
    * Let the installer install grub

When done, the computer will boot to grub, and windows is selectable from the grub menu. OR, I can used the bios uefi boot menu to choose either fedora or windows, which skips grub to boot windows.

This has worked fine for me.

Doug G exactly what I did except for custom partitions, let installer use auto partition. I think the problem lies with this laptop. It is new (3 weeks) and I updated the bios via windows 10. I believe hp is the culprit. Even my older hp had problems, and they both use Insyde bios, limited options and so on. I can use the f9 key to select boot order and that's it. Using the f9 key repeatedly will wear out the key and besides who wants to do that. On the other hand I could start over again wipe the hdd and install everything in legacy/bios, but I prefer to use uefi. After all my old hp had uefi and I did not use it for 5 years, so I figure nows the time, uefi is more mature and if I have it why not use it.

What do you see when you run the following?
    Code:
    $ sudo efibootmgr

    BootCurrent: 0001
    Timeout: 0 seconds
    BootOrder: 0001,0000
    Boot0000* Fedora
    Boot0001* rEFInd Boot Manager
See man efibootmgr for info on how to change the boot order.

dd wizard will try that right now. BTW I did find a sort of workaround, in bios I was looking to change boot order. I did not see one but I saw uefi boot manager so I took a look at it and I was able to change boot order to Fedora-Windows. the only thing is I have to use f10 to to change back to Windows.

Re: Dual boot Fedora 26 with Windows 10.

dd wizard I came across this and it works

    grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg

Now I need to see if switching os boot manger back to Window-Fedora will still bring up grub.

Re: Dual boot Fedora 26 with Windows 10.

No it does not work. So for future reference the steps are:

    1. Switch os boot manger to boot Fedora first.

    2 In Fedora terminal run "grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/efi/EFI/fedora/grub.cfg"

    I hope this helps someone.

Re: Dual boot Fedora 26 with Windows 10.

Hi guys , im not new to linux but not using it for long time. Actually im on an Acer Laptop windows 10 , need linux for some college research (softwares that only runs on fedora, centos and ubuntu->my last option) , tried several times to install Fedora and faced the same issue. I just cant load Fedora since it always starts windows real quick.

Thumbs up Re: Dual boot Fedora 26 with Windows 10.

This worked for me after much troubleshooting for UEFI.

Check for following : * Disable Fast Windows 10 boot . This will work for UEFI and secure mode enabled >>

In BIOS Security -> Select "Select an UEFI FIle as trusted for executing" -> Enter

    Go To HDD0 -> EFI -> fedora -> grubx64.efi -> Enter

Type Name such as "FEDORA 26" -> Enter -> Enter

    F10 Save and Exit .

Again go to BIOS setting and change the BOOT Order .

    Place " EFI File BOOT 0 : FEDORA 26 " above " Windows Boot Manager "

    Reboot

Tada ... Fedora and Windows 10 can now be dual booted .
