how do I check SSD drive health?

    Hi All,

SSD vendors have Windows based utilities to run trim and to check drive health. How do I do check SSD drive health in Fedora?

    Many thanks,

Re: how do I check SSD drive health?

I don't know about trim, but I use 'smartmontools' to monitor drive health.

    [root@fed26 ~]# smartctl -i /dev/sdb
    smartctl 6.5 2016-05-07 r4318 [x86_64-linux-4.11.4-300.fc26.x86_64] (local build)

Device is: In smartctl database [for details use: -P show]
ATA Version is: ATA8-ACS (minor revision not indicated)

SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability.
    SMART support is: Enabled
    [root@fed26 ~]#
There is a detailed health report available using ' smartctl -a /dev/sdx ' command.

    Its in base Fedora repo.

    [root@fed26 ~]# dnf install smartmontools
There's a decent man document. after installation just type 'man smartctl'

PS: being a CLI guy I entirely forgot there is a smart readout available on the Gnome GUI 'disks' tool. Just pick the menu in the upper right corner.

If your drive supports TRIM, you can enable the fstrim.timer service and it will get trimmed periodically

    systemctl enable --now fstrim.timer
