    Question Need help with WIFI ath10k driver for Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174

    First, I have to apologize for my English which is not really good.

    Let's go to the principal topic...

    I bought a MSI GT72 6QD laptop with a legendary Killer network device. Under windows 10 or 7 , everything run very well but under Fedora 25 or 24, I encounter problems with signal strength. I try all each tip and firmware-driver i can found on the Git or another web site who he try to explain us how we can fix some problem with connectivity, but without success. I stay with my signal issue. When I stay at 6-8 feet from my router, I receive around 80% and 72% of the full signal. And when I move in my kitchen at 20 feet from my router, I receive only 62% an 41% of the full signal. Under Windows, i receive 92% and 86% at 25 feet from my router.

    Can somebody help me and all of my Fedora friends user to fix this issue please !?!

    Here i attached all information you can need to diagnose this bad issue. (see PDF)

    I hope you can help me (and people have this issue).

    Re: Need help with WIFI ath10k driver for Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174

    I have the same WIFI hardware as you, i think.
    Im just on a Desktop computer, with WIFI on Motherboard.

    Code:
    lspci | grep -i wireless

    05:00.0 Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter (rev 32)
    Code:
    iwconfig

    wlp5s0
              IEEE 802.11  ESSID:"CiscoWifi"
              Mode:Managed  Frequency:5.18 GHz  Access Point: 58:6D:8F:BE:7E:95
              Bit Rate=6 Mb/s   Tx-Power=20 dBm
              Retry short limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
              Power Management:on
              Link Quality=55/70  Signal level=-55 dBm
              Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
              Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:78   Missed beacon:0

    I think this driver is a "one mans hard work" to just make it function for us, on Linux, so it is maybe not complete.
    Im just happy it works at all

    First i get some error info about some missing ATH10 driver stuff, while booting up Fedora.
    Then i get told that it is only connected in 6 mbps , but online tests shows me downloading with 91 mbps.

    I did get the same signal strengths as you, more or less, but i have no problems at all, that i notice.

    Do you actually have a problem, or is it "just" the signal strength reported, that you dont like ?
    (trust me, .... dont trust all you read !)

    I havent tried it out in hardcore online gaming yet (so many games on Linux now lol), but netflix, hbo etc. is streaming perfect, and with 91mbps downloading, i have no complains.

    I do have ETH cable ready with the first sign of weakness from the WIFI hehe , but so far, it works like a charm, for me

    But now you said it out loud, now im sure it gets broken with the next update

    Re: Need help with WIFI ath10k driver for Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174

    @_nobody_ ... thanks

    I have tried the "solution" before , with no changes.

    So i just tried it again, with same result, no changes, but it still works so this is just some more info .... cuz ...

    this time i did a diff and cmp on the files that i had in /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/ , which is "out of the box" on Fedora 25 (current), with the ones i just downloaded, as the "solution".

    firmware-4.bin is the same file but board.bin is different.

    Maybe the "solution" is more or less the current driver ?

    I'm really happy too... :P

    I really have a signal issue... Unfortunately, when i try the speedtest on my internet provider, i got less donwload/upload score and my latency time increase. (My internet package is 30 Mbits / sec - 5 Mbits / sec)

    But now you said it out loud, now im sure it gets broken with the next update

    I hope the next update will be fixed

    Re: Need help with WIFI ath10k driver for Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174

    My setup with an old Router, only support WIFI-BGAN, so i had to read about WIFI-AC , as this card is.

    They should, and do, connect just fine, but the thing that seemed important to keep in mind,
    is that my old Router with BGAN have antennas that transmit / receive 360 degree.

    AC is directional and ive got an external antenna, due to being a desktop motherboard, which is also directional.
    It matter on my signal strength in what direction i point the antenna.

    BUT !

    AC should be "intelligent" and remember which direction you "usually" send from, so it should not be so big a problem.
    Now i just got the thought, that maybe after a while , if you stay in the kitchen, it will boost the signal ?
    Or try to turn the laptop to test for signal strength.

    Not knowing if you got an AC router or anything, just throwing some thoughts about it ;-)

    Re: Need help with WIFI ath10k driver for Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174

    I have Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 on my Lenovo Ideapad500s. My wifi's signal reception was very weak in Fedora 30. I solved this problem by running the following commands.

    $ sudo dnf update
    $ sudo dnf install @development-tools

    Then check your kernel version by running $ uname -r
    You will get the response like 5.1.20-300.fc30.x86_64. So the kernel version is 5.1.20.

    Then go to https://kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/...kports/stable/ and find the closest linux version to your linux version present in the site. Go into it and download the backports tar file.

    Extract the tar file and cd into it from terminal. Then run the following commands to install the driver.

    $ make defconfig-ath10k
    $ make
    $ sudo make install

    Then after successful execution of all these commands. Reboot.

    You will find better wifi signal reception.
