Intel AC 8260 wifi issue, Dell Precision 7510, Fedora 24

I've installed Fedora 24 on a Dell Precision 7510 and am seeing an odd issue with the wi-fi. I'm unable to connect to my router but can connect to a different one.

Here's the strange bit: if I sniff the interface when trying to connect to my own router (a Netgear WNDR4500), I see zero traffic. If I abort and try a different router, I see traffic flowing as expected, and connect. My router uses WPA2, the other one is clear.

I have the latest BIOS and the latest Intel drivers (they came with FC24).

    Here's a sample of what I'm seeing:

Jun 24 17:12:19 schrodinger NetworkManager[1685]: <info> [xxxxxxxxxxxxxx] device (wlp2s0): supplicant interface state: inactive -> scanning
    Jun 24 17:12:20 schrodinger wpa_supplicant[1903]: wlp2s0: SME: Trying to authenticate with <mac> (SSID='xxxxxxx' freq=2427 MHz)
    Jun 24 17:12:20 schrodinger kernel: wlp2s0: authenticate with <mac>
    Jun 24 17:12:20 schrodinger kernel: wlp2s0: send auth to <mac> try 1/3)
    Jun 24 17:12:20 schrodinger kernel: wlp2s0: <mac> denied authentication (status 1)
    Jun 24 17:12:20 schrodinger wpa_supplicant[1903]: wlp2s0: CTRL-EVENT-AUTH-REJECT <mac> auth_type=0 auth_transaction=2 status_code=1 ie=dd090010180201f03c0000
    Jun 24 17:12:20 schrodinger wpa_supplicant[1903]: wlp2s0: CTRL-EVENT-SSID-TEMP-DISABLED id=0 ssid="xxxxxxxx" auth_failures=1 duration=10 reason=CONN_FAILED
    Jun 24 17:12:20 schrodinger NetworkManager[1685]: <info> [1466813540.1357] device (wlp2s0): supplicant interface state: scanning -> authenticating
    Jun 24 17:12:20 schrodinger NetworkManager[1685]: <info> [1466813540.1413] device (wlp2s0): supplicant interface state: authenticating -> disconnected

    Any thoughts appreciated.

    Hello Jeff,

I'm no expert but I think the problem is here:

    Jun 24 17:12:20 schrodinger wpa_supplicant[1903]: wlp2s0: SME: Trying to authenticate with <mac> (SSID='xxxxxxx' freq=2427 MHz)
    Jun 24 17:12:20 schrodinger kernel: wlp2s0: authenticate with <mac>
    Jun 24 17:12:20 schrodinger kernel: wlp2s0: send auth to <mac> try 1/3)
    Jun 24 17:12:20 schrodinger kernel: wlp2s0: <mac> denied authentication (status 1)

Perhaps you could disable the mac authentication on your netgear and try again.

    Just a thought.

I already tried disabling MAC white-listing on the router, no change.

Something else caught my eye: SSID='xxxxxxx' ?
Open Settings=>Network->Wifi and make sure all the info is as it should be.
If all is well, then we can take a look at the configuration files and see if we can spot something out of place.
    Code:
    cd /etc/sysconfig/network-interfaces/ifcfg-<NameOfWifi>
    vi ifcfg-<NameOfWifi>
Alternatively, you can try this to make sure there are no blocks and reinsert the wl module.
    Code:
    rfkill unblock all
    modprobe -r wl
    modprobe wl
Last but not least, check the router.
    Seems the most likely suspect.

    I hope this is helpful.

Yes, checked out all that before my original posting. I've been setting up Fedora and wi-fi a long time.

I'm suspecting some kind of issue around wpa and the 8260 firmware. Wireless itself is functional, as I've hooked up to an unsecure AP.

I think my next move is to file a bug, unless there are any other Precision 7510 owners around here ... or at least AC Intel 8260 users, who can jump in.

Are you doing this through NetworkManager? If so, it may be worth trying taking it out of the equation and trying with plain wpa_supplicant.

I have a somewhat out of date page about trying that at https://srobb.net/wireless.html.

(You can also see if temporarily changing SELinux to permissive does something, on occasion, I've had it mess up wpa--you can just run getenforce 0 to temporarily set it to permissive.).

    Hi smr54,

I'm getting pretty much the same result using wpa_supplicant, which I guess confirms that NM is probably handling it correctly. Interestingly, afterwards the interface is no longer "UP".

But also note that sniffing the interface shows zero traffic on that interface at any point.

Just a data point. I have F24 on a 5510 with AC 8260. It works fine using 2.4 or 5GHz APs.

Disabling NM also disabled the gdm.service, which threw me. Needed to re-enable :-/

Sorry, I had no idea that NetworkManager disabled GDM.

I boot into text mode and run startx, so I didn't know of that connection. Apologies.

Hey, no problem. I would not have suspected it either.

Extremely unlikely to be firmware, and the message all point to authentication.

I agree Steve, it does look like authentication. But it's not.

A separate Fedora 23 box, along with all my other devices (phones, tablets, Raspberry PIs, media streamers, audio etc.) all have zero issue connecting.

There would appear to be some specific issue with this config - Dell 7510, Intel AC 8260 and Fedora 24. Not pointing the finger at any one in particular but all my other devices are fine.

FWIW (my experience) - I stopped buying Netgears because of connection issues with all of the ones I'd encountered. There's some issue when it's time for a new lease. This was true in Windows and other OS's. It was just easier to buy another brand.
    Change - the only constant.
