    Bookmark problem

    Hello,

I am running F23 with the latest Firefox 43.0.3
Since a few days I can't add new bookmarks into the Bookmarks Menu or Toolbar...
I checked preferences and compared all of them with some other systems running the same Fedora version and Firefox version.

I simply can't figure out what happens here...

    Any idea/help would be appreciated

Seems to work fine over here.
You might want to "refresh" your firefox profile.

    Thanks!
What do you mean with "refresh" the firefox profile ?

    Cheers

Just found out that I can't even delete bookmarks. That said, the complete handling of bookmarks is corrupted...

    Re: Bookmark problem

They could all be in Unsorted Bookmarks or you have so many in your Bookmarks Toolbar that they cannot be shown within Firefox, so they appear hidden to you.

    Re: Bookmark problem

You can try Firefox 44, it's in the updates-testing dnf repository or it should show up in Fedora updates soon.

You also might try exporting your bookmarks to html, html would be a format that's easy to
review by eye to verify it's not corrupted.

Backup the existing bookmarks from the Firefox menu:

    Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks
-> Import and Backup -> Export Bookmarks to HTML... and give that file some name and save it

Exit Firefox and look over the bookmarks.html file you made. If the bookmarks look like they
make sense (new ones you just recently added are in there and the format
looks good) then move the existing firefox profile folder out of the way (rename the directory
under ~/.mozilla/firefox/*default* to some other name like
~/.mozilla/firefox/*default*-saved (note that I show asterisks there, the actual
directory name is gibberish like ~/.mozilla/firefox/abzdh1jha.default-4194567391383
but the string "default" is always in there. Mozilla does that to make the directory
    unique)

and restart Firefox, Firefox will look in the ~/.mozilla/firefox/profiles.ini and
find the named directory is not there anymore, so it will make a fresh one.

At that point in Firefox, go back into menu Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks
-> Import and Backup -> Import Bookmarks from HTML...

use the file you previously saved.

That way you'd have your original bookmarks but a brand new profile tree, possibly
fixing a corrupted places.sqlite db file that was the problem.

This is not fully good, you'd be leaving behind any saved passwords, login information and
preferences. Those are saved in other files still back in that original *saved profile folder,

    See this: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...an-old-profile
for the names and content of those files. This link here also has good instructions on how
to make a fresh profile with the "Profile Manager", that might be a good thing to try first instead of
my "move the directory hack" I've described here above.

But you can get those back by exiting Firefox again and
copying those files as you like from the old profile into the new one.

    Re: Bookmark problem

Firefox was upgraded to version 44.x

I exported the bookmarks into bookmarks.html.
Unfortunately only the bookmark folders are exported but no bookmark itself.
    The file is useless...

I tried on another system with success, i.e the exported bookmark.html contains the folders and the bookmarks.

I checked .mozilla with ls -la to see if there are any wrong permissions/owners.
It looks like the other systems.

Finally I did a Refresh Firefox which did NOT solve the problem.
Bookmarks still can't be managed anymore...

    Re: Bookmark problem

What happens if you make a fresh profile via the ProfileManager and try to add, remove, move, etc some bookmarks in that?
Is that what you meant by "Refresh Firefox"?

    Re: Bookmark problem

Refresh Firefox is a function provided by about:support. It saves the old profile and create a new one, then imports the bookmarks and other stuff from the old profile.
After this I had all bookmarks again, but I can't still add new ones and delete current ones...

Where do I find the Profile Manager ?

You start Firefox with the profile manager selected by running from the command line
    firefox -P
    or
    firefox --ProfileManager
You can see the option from the firefox --help output:
    firefox --help
It's also covered here in the URL I quoted back in post 6
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...an-old-profile

    and in particular:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...refox-profiles

    I'll give it a try.

The URL you supplied lead to the same link as about:support (Refresh Firefox)

I created a new profile with Profile Manager.
I can add, delete and modify bookmarks within this profile...

    This doesn't help me.
I can't take over the old bookmarks as I explained here before...
Refresh Firefox doesn't solve the problem. I still can't add or remove bookmarks !

Well, I don't get what you mean, you said it worked (post 12), then you say it didn't work. which is it?

I explained before, you can export the bookmarks from the broken profile and put them
in the new one. At that point just use the new profile with the imported bookmarks.
You set the new profile to be the default, that way Firefox always loads it.

If Firefox itself is completely damaged, you might want to backup the bookmarks to a plain text file
(assuming you can't export them to a html file) and then do:
    dnf reinstall firefox
    to reinstall it

If that's not it, then someone else might be able to come up with a fix.

I explained this earlier. I did export the bookmarks into bookmarks.html and did import it to the new profile.
But only the bookmark folders were exported but not the bookmarks themselves !!!
This was the very first thing I did even before I asked for help...

I saved the file firefox from .mozilla and removed and re-installed firefox and then restored the file firefox into .mozilla - this didn't hjelp !

I used the Refresh Firefox (about:support) and this didn't help !

    Thanks for you efforts.
