Upgraded F21->F23, gnome-shell/window furniture now unresponsive to mouse

    Hi all,

Bit of a strange one after upgrading from F21 to F23 (using dnf)... everything seems to have gone reasonably smoothly (better than usual, anyway), machine boots, gnome starts, auto-login takes place, auto-start applications start, etc... but the gnome UI elements are unresponsive to my mouse.

    I can:
    • see the mouse pointer, and move it around
    • interact with the apps themselves
    • use the top-left hot corner to switch to the Activities screen (or whatever it's called), and use the keyboard to select apps
    • use keyboard shortcuts, e.g. alt+tab, alt+space
    • move the mouse to turn screen back on after it's locked and blanked when inactive

    I can't (using the mouse):
    • minimise/maximise/resize/move windows (well, mostly, some apps like the settings app and Tweak Tool work)
    • click on any of the icons in the top bar
    • launch apps, select active windows, or otherwise interact with the Activities screen
    • Interact with the new notification thingy at bottom left

I'm using Wayland rather than Xorg, with the nVidia drivers from RPMFusion. My system is a fairly old one, having been upgraded from F13->15->17->19->21->23, so may have accumulated cruft along the way. I can't see any obvious errors in the journal, and can't see any other logs to try.

Anyone got any bright ideas of how to fix it (or things to try)? Any other info I can provide that might aid diagnosis? Assistance greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Russ

Re: Upgraded F21->F23, gnome-shell/window furniture now unresponsive to mouse

So it turns out I am not using Wayland:

    Code:
    root 2225 2120 2 Nov24 tty1 00:27:36 /usr/libexec/Xorg vt1 -displayfd 3 -auth /run/user/500/gdm/Xauthority -nolisten tcp -background none -noreset -keeptty -verbose 3
According to https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/WaylandByDefault it may not work on nVidia.

Doesn't help with my problem though

    Regards,

    Russ

I tried logging in as another user (never logged in to Gnome before, clean home directory) - same result. So nothing specific to my user settings it seems.

Looking in the journal for gnome-shell, there's these:
    Code:

And digging in to one of those errors I found this thread relating to Arch Linux, which describes my problem to a tee TL;DR: this happens with the 304xx nVidia driver; switching to the 340xx one (if it supports your card) seems to do the trick.

And lo and behold, I'm on 304xx:
    Code:
    [root@gigalith ~]# rpm -qa | grep nvidia
    xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-304xx-304.131-1.fc23.x86_64
    xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-304xx-libs-304.131-1.fc23.x86_64
    kmod-nvidia-304xx-4.1.13-100.fc21.x86_64-304.128-2.fc21.2.x86_64
    akmod-nvidia-304xx-304.131-1.fc23.x86_64
    kmod-nvidia-304xx-4.2.6-300.fc23.x86_64-304.131-1.fc23.x86_64
    kmod-nvidia-304xx-4.2.6-301.fc23.x86_64-304.131-1.fc23.x86_64
In my case I did try the 340xx driver on F21 but it caused my system to lock up (details) so that's why I'm on the 304xx one. Time to try it again methinks! But it's late so that's one for another day.

Stay tuned for the next exciting installment

Re: Upgraded F21->F23, gnome-shell/window furniture now unresponsive to mouse

Well that was a mixed success... it seems with the 340xx driver that Gnome indeed works properly, but I'm right back against the other bug that causes system lockups after a few mins (on my card -YMMV)

I also had some weird "Oh no something went wrong" errors from Gnome, with the only option to logout. Intermittent though, and may be the same root cause.

So I'm back on 304xx for now. I've also verified that the same issue with mouse input not being recognised occurs if I select "GNOME Classic" on login.

Next step: try 340xx with "flip" disabled, as suggested on the thread on the nVidia forums - once I RTFM to find out how to do that ;-)

I hope this is useful to someone.

Disabling "flip" didn't work either. Details of what I did on the other thread if anyone's interested.

Re: Upgraded F21->F23, gnome-shell/window furniture now unresponsive to mouse

My (piecemeal) saga of woe continues unabated in the new year. I gave up on the nVidia drivers, an uninstalled them to go back to the nouveau drivers. Gnome starts fine and I seem to be able to move windows around and so on (i.e. it works) but almost immediately after starting it locks up (gnome unresponsive to input, no display updates, clock stopped, although the mouse pointer moves, computer is still running and I can SSH in, switch consoles, etc.) with 100% CPU usage by gnome-shell. Killing the process and allowing it to restart doesn't help.

Has anyone experienced this, and have any pointers to diagnose or fix?

Try this in Grub. It works well for me with Nvidia, but I don't use Gnome:
    nouveau.noaccel=1

With Gnome Roy has reported that login in gdm is unresponsive, but after login things are fine:

Thanks Piscium. I'll give that a try as soon as I have a bit of spare time.

Re: Upgraded F21->F23, gnome-shell/window furniture now unresponsive to mouse

I have just recently upgraded from Fedora 23 to Fedora 25 and encountered the exact same issue as gloomytrousers AFTER installing the RPMfusion Nvidia drivers. I'm using a

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF119 [GeForce GT 610] (rev a1)

so my first instict was to install the rpmfusion drivers when I upgraded to Fedora 25, but immediately ran into the same problem. Then I searched around and remembered about the negativo17.org nvidia drivers, which I also used in fedora23. I followed the instructions here http://negativo17.org/nvidia-driver/ to add the nagativo repository, remove the rpmfusion drivers, add the negativo17 drivers and everything is now working and back to normal.

Re: Upgraded F21->F23, gnome-shell/window furniture now unresponsive to mouse

    Hi dolemite/all,

I realised I forgot to update this thread. Eventually I discovered that the Nvidia driver didn't support the newer version of the X API, and whilst the other versions got updated, the older 314(?) version that I need to support my graphics card didn't.

Subsequently my motherboard developed a fault so I replaced it - after all the trouble I had with Nvidia drivers over the years I went with a Radeon one instead. No problems with that! So I never did get it working with the old driver - I don't know if Nvidia ever updated it.

    Regards,

    Russ
