Unhappy F22 freeze on laptop Asus ROG G551JW

    Hi,

I recently install Fedora 22 (4.1.5-200.fc22.x86_64) on my new laptop Asus ROG G551JW-DM282T PC Portable Gamer 15,6".

Sometimes the laptop just freeze and I cannot use the mouse or the keyboard. The Magic SysRq Key to reboot doesn't work, I have to hard reboot every time.

Can you help me? I really need my laptop to work properly.

What can help to find what's the bug? Do I need to install proprietary driver or make some modifications for the ssd? I haven't made any change, I use the default settings.

    Thanks.

Does that laptop also have an Intel integrated graphics card? If that's the case, it probably sports Optimus Technology [nvidia.com]. That means that for anything except less demanding tasks (i.e. gaming, video editing, etc.) you'll need to manually activate the discrete Nvidia graphics chip. This is supported on Linux (and specifically on Fedora) by Bumblebee [fedoraproject.org]. This package installs the proprietary Nvidia drivers necessary for gaming etc. and allows you to switch between the two graphics processors.

Use the "lspci -k" (list PCI devices with available/loaded kernel modules) command and look for VGA devices. The Intel iGPU should be the main VGA provider and should be the one running your display.

Freezing might be a sign of an issue with X window settings or the nouveau driver (or both). Does the sound still play after the system freezes?

Re: F22 freeze on laptop Asus ROG G551JW

I would recommend familiarizing oneself with bumblebee on Fedora : http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bumblebee

When it's set up properly, you won't need nomodeset anymore as the 4th Intel HD Graphics will handle the 3D acceleration and basic desktop features. For more demanding tasks (3D rendering, gaming, etc.) you will be able to utilize your super powerful GeForce GTX 960M via the optirun console command.

That way your laptop will stay cool and keep its battery up longer .

EDIT: I believe X + nouveau was indeed the source of those freezes. Nouveau could not handle the 3D acceleration properly and would crash X from time to time. The sound running + lack of controls is actually a good indication of that. It would suggest that all of the X components just gave up and those drive mouse/keyboard/touchpad input, as well as video output. Sound devices are handled independently .

Leave tail -f /var/log/messages running in some window..
when it hangs, see what the last entries are..

Btw, Does it hang doing something special? or when idle?
